This is a short (very short) Story of a possible circumstance of life. Please let me know what you think. Oh yeah, this is a Xena take-off. No infringement is intended, and all rights belong to the proper personage.
I was sitting in the radiology lab’s waiting room when an old woman came in. She was thin, almost to emaciation,
sporting a neat white pant suit and a silk flowered blouse. She had short salt and pepper hair and gold framed
glasses. Her naturally dark complexion and weathered skin were a striking contrast. Her cane, although chromed,
gave the appearance of being white also and somehow deadly. She was taller than most women, and I got the impression
that she was formidable even now as the years were descending upon her.
While I was sitting there, I felt a shadow pass over me. I glanced up, not knowing what to expect. She was a large
woman. Not so much in height but in girth. Her eyes met mine. I felt myself being pulled in as if I needed to speak
to her of life’s questions that I didn’t know I had. As I was beginning to open my mouth, her partner called to
her.
"Gabrielle, over here."
The woman’s face started to glow as their eyes met, and I could see a love that has surpassed all of the years.
They both looked young again.
The difference between them was a study of contrasts. Where one’s hair was salt and pepper, the other had silver.
Where one had a sense of darkness, the other was light with life glowing inside and all around her. Life had obviously
taken its toll on both women, but only in the physical sense.
At that time, the nurse came in and called, "Gabrielle."
The silver haired woman tried to rise from the chair and was obviously having trouble. The thin woman switched
her cane to the other hand and pulled the larger woman to her feet. Again their eyes met, and I could tell that
the world around them did not exist. But just for a second. They parted, the thin woman sat down while the heavy
one swayed clumsily past me.
I quietly watched as the thin woman’s eyes watched with concern at her friends passing. She blushed slightly when
she noticed I was watching. I, in turn, was embarrassed at having been caught. The nurse re-entered. "Mandy."
That was the last that I saw of these two strong, ancient women. My mind asks me how long they have been together.
I shake my head and chuckle. I see romance and forever after everywhere, if it is there or not.
