Solan, like his mother, was up early and ready to start the day. Xena decided to let Gabrielle sleep as long as she could, knowing how much she hated the morning. Xena went over to wake her bard and stood wondering how long it would take for her to get up. She knelt down and put a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Come on sleepyhead, time to get up."
Gabrielle stirred and stretched, then rolled over and went back to sleep. She had no intention of getting up on the first call.
"Gabrielle, we've got to get on the road, preferably before Solan is married with a family of his own." Xena winked at her son who tried to stifle a giggle.
"Five more minutes Xena," came the sleepy response.
"Gabrielle, we're leaving in one candlemark, with or without you."
"Okay."
"Mum?"
In a flash Gabrielle was sitting up straight and staring at Solan. "Solan, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, mother said if you didn't get up we'd leave without you. I don't want to leave you behind," came the concerned voice.
Gabrielle smiled at her son. "Solan, she wouldn't leave me behind. Would you?"
"I don't know Mum." Xena laughed heartily.
"What's so funny?"
"If I had known Mum was the secret word to get you up in the morning, I would have used that a long time ago."
"Very funny Xena." Gabrielle tried to be angry with her Warrior but soon found herself laughing when Xena bent down and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.
"Come on Solan, let's get the waterskins filled. Only this time, try and stay dry." Solan put his small hand in Xena's and walked off.
As the family neared Amphipolis, Xena became more anxious. Only a trained eye could see the muscles in her back contract. Gabrielle knew her love was nervous about Cyrene and Solan meeting.
"Xena, everything will work out, they'll hit it off."
Xena turned and looked into green eyes. "How is it you always know how I feel?"
"I too have skills, warrior love."
Late afternoon brought the group to the Inn. Before Xena could hand Argo over to the stable boy, Cyrene came running out of the Inn.
"Mother, I'd like you to meet Solan."
"Solan, this is my mother Cyrene."
Cyrene opened her arms to the boy who soon found himself in a tight hug. Any reservations Xena had melted away when Grandmother and Grandson embraced. Cyrene led Solan into the inn leaving Xena and Gabrielle to gather up Lycea and their belongings.
Once inside, Cyrene went to the bar and banged a mug down to get everyone's attention. A hush came over the room.
"This is my Grandson, Solan, and while he's here there isn't to be any cursing or fighting. Ya got that?"
An assortment of people answered yes and were soon back to their meals. Xena and Gabrielle entered and found themselves being ushered to a table in the back of the room. Cyrene took Lycea from Gabrielle and seated herself next to Solan, leaving Xena and Gabrielle together. Belvis came along with drinks for everyone. Grandmother and Grandson fell into easy conversation and in no time Cyrene was walking off to show Solan the sights. Xena and Gabrielle took
Lycea to their room and settled her into her crib for a nap. Gabrielle stood over the crib watching her small daughter sleep. Strong arms came around her waist and pulled her close. Gabrielle turned her head and looked at Xena with sparkling eyes.
"I don't think I'll ever tire of this, Xena."
"Me either."
Xena pulled Gabrielle down onto the bed. The two lovers began to explore one another's mouth as Gabrielle began to slowly caress Xena all over. The mere touch of Gabrielle's hand on her made the warrior shudder. Long minutes were spent kissing and touching. Xena reluctantly pulled away from Gabrielle, removed her leathers then turned and helped Gabrielle take off her top and skirt. Both women moaned and sighed as skin met skin. As long as she lived, Gabrielle knew she'd never get enough of the physical contact she shared with Xena. She wondered if Xena felt the same. As if in answer to her question, Xena pulled the bard close and whispered huskily in her ear, "oh Gabrielle I can never get enough of touching you, I never want it to end."
"It never will Xena, I promise."
As usual Xena woke first, dressed and went to check on Lycea who was sound asleep. Panic swept over her as she looked at her beloved daughter. What if this wasn't real, what if it was a cruel joke by the gods, and Lycea wasn't really theirs? No, one look at her and Xena could see how much like her mothers she looked. She wondered what kind of woman her little princess would become. Would she be strong like Xena or loving like Gabrielle? Xena prayed to the gods she'd have the best of both. Blue eyes popped open and a momentary flash of panic swept across the little face until it looked up and saw familiar blue eyes looking back. Lycea relaxed knowing that soon strong arms attached to that familiar face would pick her up and talk to her. Sure enough, Xena picked up the small bundle and held her close. She placed feather light kisses all over the small delight. Lycea felt an attachment to this big strong woman who enjoyed holding and kissing her at any given moment. Xena walked over to the bed and sat down next to Gabrielle.
"Hey Mum, somebody needs to eat."
Gabrielle opened her eyes and smiled up at Xena and Lycea. Xena passed Lycea to Gabrielle and took her place. Lycea felt another wave of happiness pass through her as her other mother took her in her arms. She loved nothing better than to be held by these two women who spoke openly of their love for their family. Once fed and changed, Lycea cooed and gurgled while Gabrielle sat in a chair and held her. Xena was sharpening her sword, stopped every so often just to watch the two.
"Xena we should get downstairs, your mother probably thinks we're lost."
"I hope she and Solan are hitting it off." Xena was nervous that the two of the four most important people in her life wouldn't get along.
"I'm sure they're doing fine."
Xena returned the sword to its place and led Gabrielle and Lycea downstairs. They made their way to the kitchen where they found Cyrene and Solan deep in conversation. Xena rolled her eyes when she heard the tail end of their conversation.
"And then Xena stepped from behind and said, make me."
Solan laughed hard. "Grandmother, you tell stories as good as Mum."
"I never knew Xena to be a storyteller."
"I'm talking about Gabrielle, she's Mum and Xena is mother."
Cyrene smiled when she looked up in time to see the trio enter the kitchen. Her beaming face told Xena everything she needed to know. Xena walked over to Solan and put a maternal arm around his shoulder.
"Come on Solan, let's go outside and work up an appetite." Xena ushered her son out the door while Gabrielle and Lycea sat down in the kitchen.
"How long will you be staying daughter?"
"I'm not sure. You know Xena, she never likes to stay in once place too long."
Cyrene came over and sat down next to Gabrielle. "Gabrielle, I want to talk to you about something. You must know how pleased I am that you've been the one to make my daughter so happy." Gabrielle placed her hand over Cyrene's. "I've come to think of you as my daughter."
"And I think of you as my mother."
"Gabrielle, years ago one of my customers left me his land. He never married, and used to take all his meals here. I'd like to give you and Xena the property. It has a cabin, a small lake and a barn."
"Cyrene, that's very kind of you, but we couldn't accept. You should sell it and keep the money."
Cyrene held up her hand. "No, Gabrielle, I want you and Xena to have a place to call home."
"We do, right here."
"Your own home. Of course, this is your home, but the children need a legacy."
"I'll talk to Xena tonight. Thank you."
Gabrielle was touched by Cyrene's offer. She'd find a way to discuss it with Xena without making her feel trapped into settling down.
Solan stood in awe of his mother as she did a back flip over the boys
head.
"Mother, teach me how to do that!"
"it takes years of practice."
"Please, I want to learn!"
"Okay, but you must listen to what I say."
"Okay."
"It's all in the legs. Come on I'll show you." Xena grabbed the boy and tucked him under her arm. With strong legs from years of working out they flew into the air and began the back flip. Just as Xena was mid air Gabrielle came out to call the duo to dinner. Normally she loved to watch Xena perform her stunts but not when she was holding their son. Xena and Solan landed at Gabrielle's feet. Solan was grinning from ear to ear.
"Mother, that was fun, may we do it again?"
One look at Gabrielle's face and Xena knew she was in trouble.
"Solan, it's time for dinner, please go and get washed up."
"Yes Mum." Solan turned and looked at Xena. "Mother, after dinner can we do it again?"
Gabrielle stood with her hands on her hips glaring at Xena.
"We'll see."
Solan entered the inn followed by Xena.
"Hold it warrior!"
Putting on her best smile, Xena turned around to face the bard. "Yes love?"
Gabrielle shook her finger at the warrior. "Don't you yes love me. What do you think you were doing with Solan?"
"Teaching him how to do back flips. What did it look like?"
"It's too dangerous, he could get hurt."
"Gabrielle, I do it all the time, you never say anything."
"Yes, but you've been doing it for years."
"He needs to learn how to protect himself."
Gabrielle could feel the anger rising in her. "Yes, protect himself, not break his neck. Look Xena, I don't want our son getting hurt needlessly."
Xena smiled when she heard Gabrielle say our son. She was sure the bard didn't even realize what she had just said.
"What's so funny?"
Xena crossed her arms. "Our son, has a nice ring to it."
Gabrielle realized what she had said and a big grin found its way to her face. "Xena, just promise me you'll be careful. I don't want anything to ruin what we have."
Xena placed her hands on Gabrielle's shoulders. "I promise, I won't. But you know I'm right we need to teach Solan how to protect himself. There are still people out there who will harm him to get to me."
Gabrielle leaned in and kissed Xena on the cheek. "Okay, but try to keep it down to a dull roar."
Later after everyone had settled down for the night, Gabrielle decided to approach Xena with Cyrene's offer. Lycea was fussy so Xena pulled the chair by the crib and began to rub her back. She started to hum an old tune she remembered from childhood. Gabrielle enjoyed watching the bond that was growing between mother and daughter. Somehow Lycea always seemed to relax when Xena was around. In no time she was fast asleep. Gabrielle had changed into her shift and had gone to bed to wait for Xena. Xena finally changed and slipped into bed next to Gabrielle. She put an arm around the bard and drew her close. Gabrielle placed an arm around the warrior's stomach and nestled her head in the he crook of Xena's shoulder. Xena could smell the clean lilac scent of Gabrielle's hair.
"Xena?"
"Mmh?" Xena kissed the top of Gabrielle's head.
"Your mother has offered us a place of our own when we come to visit."
Xena was rubbing Gabrielle's breasts through her shift. The young woman was having a hard time concentrating long enough to continue.
"That's nice."
"I'm not asking you to settle down, but it would be nice to have a place to call our own, you know if we need a time out from the road."
"Whatever you want, dear."
Xena began to kiss the bards neck, causing her to moan loudly. The older woman always loved to hear Gabrielle moan under her touch.
"We could fix it up, the children would have a place to call home."
"Okay."
"Maybe someplace to rest when we're old and gray."
"Gabrielle," Xena purred.
"Yes?"
"I said okay. Now stop talking and let me kiss you."
"If you insist."
"I do."
Gabrielle was up early for a change. Lycea had awoken and wanted breakfast. By the time the baby finished Gabrielle was wide awake and decided to practice with her staff. She left Xena still in bed holding the infant. The early morning air felt invigorating against her skin. A brisk walk found her outside the village. Gabrielle came across a strong, sturdy tree she decided would make an excellent sparing partner. She struck the tree with all her might. The force of the blow chipped a large chunk of bark off. A grin spread across her face as she felt the stalker approach. Gabrielle spun around and leveled her staff at the intruder's head. It was stopped mid air by a pair of strong hands.
"Ugh!" Gabrielle yelled.
"You have to get up pretty early in the morning to outsmart me."
"I thought I had."
"Cute Gabrielle. I'm proud of you, your response time is getting faster."
"Yes Xena, but how much of it is skill and how much of it is my feeling your presence? I do you know, feel you. Sometimes it feels as though we're one."
"I know Gabrielle, believe me, I know."
Xena turned her head sharply.
"What is it?"
"It's Solan, something is wrong."
In a flash Xena ran off and headed towards the inn. Gabrielle followed behind, but couldn't keep up with Xena's long strides. Xena arrived just as Cyrene came running out of the inn. The young boy was holding his right arm the look on his face told Xena he was in a lot of pain. Gabrielle arrived moments later out of breathe from running hard. Xena looked at the arm.
"Solan, it's broken. What happened?"
Suddenly Solan felt like a little kid.
"I tried to do a backflip and landed on my arm."
Xena tried to keep her anger in check. "Solan, I told you not to try this on your own."
"I'm sorry Mother, I wasn't thinking."
Since her Warlord days Xena had always hated the excuse, I wasn't thinking. Many of her men had lost their lives because they hadn't used their head. She wasn't going to let the same thing happen to her son. He had to learn to think through his actions.
"If you're going to travel with us you're going to have to learn to use your head."
"Yes ma'am." Solan looked to Gabrielle for comfort. She put a reassuring arm around her son.
"I need to set your arm." Xena looked at Cyrene. "Mother, will you please take Solan to his room?"
Cyrene nodded and led the suddenly frail boy to his room. Xena started to follow but was held back by a firm hand on her arm.
"Xena, don't you think you were a little rough on him?"
"Yeah."
Gabrielle put her hands on her hips and stared straight into Xena's blue eyes.
"Well?"
"Look Gabrielle."
"No, you look Xena. Don't make the mistake of pushing him away. He's just found out he has a mother, a mother he idolizes. He wants to impress you."
Xena put her arm around Gabrielle and pulled her into a tight embrace. "I'm just so scared that something will happen to him, and I won't be there to protect him."
"Xena, any mother feels that way about her child. Just relax, everything will work out."
"Gabrielle, did I ever tell you I love you?"
"Once or twice. But feel free to tell me anytime."
"I love you Gabrielle."
Xena went to Solan's room. She could see he had been crying from the red in his eyes. Xena sat down on the bed next to her son, noticing for the first time how vulnerable he was.
"Solan, do you remember the last time you broke your arm and I put the pinch on you?" Solan nodded. "Well, I'm going to have to do it again."
"Okay, go ahead."
Xena put the pinch on her son and set his arm. Luckily is wasn't a bad break and would heal in a few weeks.
"This is getting to be a habit."
Solan was puzzled by the remark. "What do you mean?"
"Everytime I'm around you break your arm." Xena winked at her son, who broke into a sheepish grin. "Solan, I'm sorry I was short with you."
"It's not your fault. I didn't listen. I promise mother, I won't do it again."
"I know you won't." Xena bent down and kissed Solan on the top of his head. He settled down in the the crook of her arm and was soon asleep.
"Gabrielle, I'm taking Argo for a run."
Before the bard could answer Xena was out the door and miles from the inn. Xena felt free as the wind licked her face. She loved these quiet times with Argo when it was just warrior and horse running until they were both exhausted. Finally Xena brought the mare to a halt and let her drink from a nearby stream while she sat quietly watching her faithful horse. How easy it would be to just leave everything behind and travel alone again with Argo. Just the two of them, no one depending on her for their survival. She laughed, it wouldn't be easy. She could no more leave Gabrielle and the children than she could make all the gods in Olympus disappear. They were a part of her soul now, and nothing could change that. Maybe Gabrielle was right, just relax and everything will work out. Xena whistled for Argo, who trotted over to her mistress.
"Time to get back girl." Xena hoisted herself into the saddle and headed back to the inn at an easy pace. Along the way she saw a familiar figure walking towards her.
"Hi."
"Everything okay, Gabrielle?" Xena asked as she swung down from the horse.
"Fine, just thought you might need a friendly face."
Xena put her arm around the bard's waist. "What did I ever do to deserve you?"
"I ask myself that same question everyday."
Gabrielle looked up at Xena with such love it almost brought her to tears. She could never leave Gabrielle. She was the other half of her soul, her life, her guiding light.
"Gabrielle, are we crazy to try and travel with children?"
"Xena, listen to me. Granted right now, they're young and we have to look out for their safety, but they'll learn, and before we know it, they'll be taking care of themselves and us. I seem to remember this young inexperienced girl who decided to travel with this semi-tough warrior, and she had no fighting skills. You should see her now!"
Xena grinned at her love. "Semi tough warrior?"
"Tough warrior? Xena trust me, everything will be fine."
"Gabrielle, you don't really know that."
"No I don't, but I feel it in here." Gabrielle placed her hand over her heart.
At that moment Xena was filled with an incredible sense of peace. She really did believe everything would work out.
"Besides, just let someone try and mess with my family, I'll, I'll- "
"You'll what?" asked the warrior.
"I'll sic' you on them."
Xena laughed out loud then became silent.
"Xena, what is it?"
"Gabrielle, I'd like us to leave tomorrow for the Amazons. I can't wait any longer, I need us to be joined right away."
"Oh Xena, yes."
The two strolled back to the inn at a leisurely pace. Every few steps one of them would stop and kiss the other. This made walking a difficult feat. When they arrived at the inn the only thing they could hear was Lycea screaming. A pang of guilt tugged at Gabrielle. She and Xena had been so wrapped up in one another, they lost track of time. The two entered their room and fed the crying bundle. With a good meal in her belly, Lycea was back to the happy baby she normally was.
"Xena, I feel so guilty we didn't get back in time."
"Gabrielle, we were only a few minutes late. Besides, the mothers needed a little time to themselves."
"I know, I just want to be the best mother I can be."
"You are. I can't think of anyone I would rather have as the mother of my children than you."
Gabrielle looked at Xena and smiled. Then a devilish look came across her face, putting Xena on guard.
"Xena love, would you mind looking after the children, I have some shopping I need to do."
"Sure." Xena knew she was up to something. "Just try and stay out of trouble."
"Trouble, me?"
Gabrielle left Xena with the children while she went to shop. The bard had managed to save dinars while out on the road and had planned to use them to buy Xena a gift. She made her way to the local jeweler, and entered his shop. She poked around at the different pieces and then she saw them. Two identical rings with sapphires and an emerald. The rings were perfect. The emerald was in the middle flanked on either side with two sapphires.
"Now that's what I call a family ring."
The owner of the shop came over to Gabrielle to show her the ring.
"Exquisite aren't they?"
"How much for the rings?"
"150 dinars apiece."
"300 dinars? You've got to be kidding!"
By the time Gabrielle was through with the poor shopkeeper he'd agreed to let Gabrielle have both rings for 100 dinars and a promise never to return. Feeling quite smug with herself, Gabrielle returned to the inn. She found Xena and Lycea seated on the bed with Solan. It warmed her heart to see Xena with their children. Whether she knew it or not, Xena was a natural with children. Solan's eyes lit up when he saw Gabrielle.
"Hi Mum."
Gabrielle walked over to the bed and planted a kiss on the boys cheek. Solan still couldn't believe how happy he was. He finally had two parents who loved him. He couldn't believe how his luck had changed since his uncle died. Gabrielle placed a pouch in the boy's hand.
"What's this?"
"Open it and see."
Solan opened the pouch and found it full of rock candy. His eyes lit up when he saw his booty.
"Oh Mum, my favorite, thank you!"
"You're welcome. Just don't eat it all before dinner."
"I promise, I won't."
Xena and Gabrielle left Solan and headed back to their room. Xena placed the baby in her crib. Before long she was fast asleep.
"Gabrielle, there's something we need to discuss."
"What is it?"
"Solan can't go with us to the Amazons."
The sudden realization hit Gabrielle. "Oh Xena, I hadn't thought about it."
"Ancient Amazon customs dictate no male may attend an Amazon joining. Gabrielle, I don't want Solan to think we're leaving him."
Gabrielle hated to say it but she knew she must. "Xena, maybe we should put it off."
"No Gabrielle, we're going through with the joining. Solan needs to learn that there will be times when he won't be able to travel with us."
"Ok, I'll go talk to him."
"Why you?" asked Xena.
"Remember, I do the sensitive chats."
"Right, just like you did with Hower."
"Xena, you didn't have any luck with Hower either."
"Mmh."
Gabrielle left Xena and went to Solan. She found him playing with an old finger puppet Cyrene had found.
"Hi Mum."
"Hi Solan. How's the arm?"
"It hurts, but I'm okay."
Gabrielle went and say on the edge of the bed. "Solan, we need to talk."
"Am I in trouble?"
"No, why do you say that?"
"Because everytime adults say they need to talk, it means you're in trouble."
Gabrielle laughed and planted a kiss on Solan's cheek. "Solan, your mother and I need to go to the Amazons for a few days."
Solan was right, he'd been bad and now he was being left behind.
"Solan, I know you probably think that we're leaving you behind but I promise you it's not because we want to."
"Then why can't I go?"
"I love your mother very much and we want to become a real family. And in order to do that we must go to the Amazons to be married. The Amazons don't allow males to watch the sacred ceremony."
"Why can't you do it here?"
"Because some people think that two women shouldn't be married."
"But that's stupid."
"I agree. But there is something you can do for me while we're gone. But you must promise not tell your mother, it's a surprise."
"I like surprises."
"Okay, here's the plan."
Gabrielle whispered into Solan's ear afraid Xena's keen hearing would pick up everything she said. The boy broke into a wide grin when Gabrielle's plans were exposed. A short while later Gabrielle headed back to her room where she found Xena still on the bed holding Lycea.
"Well?"
"Solan's all set."
"What did you say?"
"Oh no warrior, I keep my skills to myself."
"Gabrielle," Xena purred.
Gabrielle walked over to the bed and kissed Xena firmly on the lips. "I love it when you say my name."
"Gabrielle."
"Xena."
The following morning Xena and Gabrielle were packed and ready to leave for the Amazons. Solan walked his mothers outside, sad to see them leave. Xena picked him up and gave him a big tight bear hug. When Xena turned to hug her mother goodbye, Gabrielle bent down, kissed Solan on the cheek and slipped him a handful of dinars. Xena saw the exchange but didn't let on, letting the two think they'd gotten away with whatever they were planning. Xena carefully placed Lycea in her carrier, took Argo's rein, then walked off leaving Gabrielle behind. Gabrielle had to run to catch up her with her love.
"Were you planning on getting joined by yourself?"
"I knew you'd find me."
The two walked on in compatible silence. Gabrielle didn't feel the need to always be talking to Xena, instead she was happy just to be with her, or to occasionally touch her.
The rest of the way to the Amazons was clear. Lycea was happy in her carrier or being held by her mothers. Gabrielle heard the sounds before she could see anyone. She and Xena raised their arms over their heads in the customary Amazon greeting. The scouting party appeared and bowed before their Queen. The trio was led to the village where they were met be a very happy Ephiny.
"Gabrielle, Xena!"
Gabrielle hugged her friend tightly.
"How's Solari?"
"She's fine, we're fine."
Xena handed Lycea to Ephiny.
"Here, get to know your daughter."
Ephiny relished the feel of a baby in her arms. She hoped that she and Solari would be blessed with a daughter of their own someday. For now she was happy to Lycea to fuss over.
"So what brings you back so soon? Is everything okay?"
"Ephiny, Xena and I want to be joined."
Ephiny's face broke into a wide grin. "Now that is good news. I'm so happy for you both."
"We're happy for us too, aren't we Xena?"
"Yeah, right."
"Don't sound so happy Xena."
"It's okay Ephiny," Gabrielle laughed, "she's just nervous."
"So when would you like to be joined?"
Xena looked at her friend and grinned. "Is tomorrow too soon?"
"No, not at all. I'll start the preparations." Ephiny handed Lycea back to Xena and headed off to get things moving.
Xena and Gabrielle made their way to their hut to rest before dinner. Lycea was exhausted and went to sleep as soon as Xena put her down. The two were woken up by a knock on the door. Xena got up, opened the door and came face to face with a grinning Solari.
"Your baby-sitter is here."
"What?"
"Eph sent me to watch Lycea while you go to your dinner."
"What dinner?"
"The dinner Ephiny is having in honor of your marriage to Gabrielle."
"Solari, how bout you take Gabrielle and I'll stay with Lycea."
"Sorry Xena, Ephiny's orders."
"Okay, but give us a couple of minutes to get ready, then Lycea is all yours."
Solari winked at Xena and left with a promise to return shortly. Gabrielle put on a bright green cotton dress which brought out the red in her hair. Xena had to resist all temptation to rip it off the bard and take her right there. But then again, she thought to herself, if she waited it would be all the more to look forward to. Xena opted for a bright red dress Gabrielle had given her the last time they were in Athens. Gabrielle had to make herself breathe when she took one look at Xena. The red in the dress made her eyes look even more blue, if that was possible.
"Xena, are you sure you feel like dinner?"
"Yes."
"That's funny, all of a sudden I'm hungry for something else."
Xena laughed to herself as she looked at her love and saw the desire in her green eyes.
"I mean we could eat later."
Xena tweaked Gabrielle's nose. "Gabrielle, good things come to those who wait."
"Oh all right."
Solari arrived armed with toys for Lycea. She was ready to spend some serious time with her daughter. If things went well she and Ephiny would be having their own soon. Meanwhile, Xena led Gabrielle to the food hut, where they took their place at the head table with Ephiny. Xena settled in knowing that the long evening ahead would consist of congratulations from well wishers and Gabrielle delighting everyone with stories of their adventures together.
As the evening progressed, Xena thought she'd go crazy if she had to hear one more congratulation. These Amazons were relentless in their well wishes. But Gabrielle just sat there thanking each and every woman who stopped by. Xena marveled at how Gabrielle had the ability to make each person feel that they were special for stopping by. A sign of a good Queen. If nothing else, Gabrielle was well loved by her people.
Finally the end of the evening came, none too soon for Xena. If she had to endure another minute of the dinner she was going to throw her dagger at someone. After saying goodnight to Ephiny, Xena led Gabrielle out into the dewy evening. Gabrielle shivered as the cool night air hit her skin. Xena's arm came around her shoulder and drew her close.
"Mmh, my own personal people warmer."
"A job I happily accept."
The two walked on in silence, enjoying one another's company. Gabrielle stopped walking and looked up at her love.
"Xena, are you sure about tomorrow? I mean if you don't want to go through with it, I'll understand."
Xena froze, hoping that Gabrielle hadn't changed her mind. She didn't know what she'd do if Gabrielle no longer wanted to get married. She loved this woman more than she realized, but she also knew she loved Gabrielle enough to let her go if that was what the bard wanted.
"Gabrielle, are you having second thoughts?"
"Oh no, I just thought that maybe you, well you know wouldn't want to give up your freedom. I mean I just don't want you to feel you have to marry me."
Xena took Gabrielle's hand in hers. "Gabrielle, until I met you I never thought about getting married. That was something other people did, not Ex- Warlords. And then I met you, and I kept wondering what it would be like to marry you, knowing that I would go to bed at night with you in my arms, and wake up with you in the morning. So, no, I haven't changed my mind."
"And here I thought I was the bard."
Xena smiled playfully at Gabrielle. "Besides, once I marry you that'll keep those Amazons that are lusting after you at bay."
"You mean Xena the great Warrior Princess has a jealous streak?"
"That's right, you're my woman and I want them to know that."
"Somehow I think they do," Gabrielle laughed.
The two continued walking and this time it was Xena who stopped when they arrived outside of their hut.
"Xena, what's wrong?"
"This is where I get off."
"What do you mean?"
"Gabrielle, I think we should spend tonight apart."
"Why?"
"So tomorrow night will be special."
"Xena, every night with you is special."
Xena raised her eyebrow up. "Gabrielle."
"Oh all right, but I won't sleep."
Xena took the bard in her arms and leaned down to kiss her. Gabrielle didn't want to let go, knowing when she did Xena would be gone. Ever since they had been together Gabrielle couldn't sleep until she was in Xena's arms.
"Xena, I love you."
"I love you too, Gabrielle." Xena pulled away from the bard and winked. "Now go to sleep."
"Where will you stay?"
"With Eponin."
"Just remember to keep your hands to yourself, Warrior."
Xena nodded and quickly left before she lost her will and took the woman. Neither one slept that night, each feeling the loss of the other half of her soul.
Morning finally came and each woman began to get ready for the impending ceremony. Ephiny joined Gabrielle to help her while Eponin was Xena's chosen aide. Solari happily baby sat. Gabrielle was led to her bath while Ephiny and Solari played with Lycea.
"Oh Eph, she's so beautiful. I can hardly wait until we have our own."
"I know, me too. But you know, before we have a child I think maybe we should be joined."
Suddenly Ephiny felt nervous. This wasn't how she planned to ask Solari to be her wife, but then again nothing about their relationship was conventional.
"Ephiny, are you asking me to marry you?"
"If you'll have me."
"If you hadn't of asked, I would have, you know."
Ephiny felt her heart do a flip flop. "So, is that a yes?"
"Oh yes my darling."
Solari and Ephiny fell into one another's arms and began kissing when Gabrielle entered from her bath.
"Hey, who's wedding day is this?"
"Gabrielle, Solari has consented to be my wife."
Gabrielle broke into a wide grin. "I'm so happy for you both."
"Gabrielle, if you hadn't done what you did, we never would have admitted our feelings for one another," Ephiny said.
"So does this mean I'll be conducting your ceremony?"
"Uh huh," replied Ephiny.
"Just name the day and we'll be here."
"We'll let you know."
As Queen of the Amazons Gabrielle was dressed in a multi colored gown. Xena was given a beautiful royal blue dress that brought out the blue in her eyes. At the given time the two were led to the podium where the ceremony was to take place. The crowd was thick with women waiting to see their Queen marry the hottest warrior in Greece. Gabrielle thought her heart would stop beating when she looked up and saw Xena.
"Breathe, Gabrielle," Ephiny joked.
Xena had to keep her emotions in check when she laid eyes on her beloved. The red in her hair was on fire as the sun shone on it. They stood next to each other, hands tightly clasped. Gabrielle knew she would fall over it weren't for Xena's strong hand in hers. Ephiny stepped forward and raised her arms, causing a hush to come over the crowd.
"Amazons, today we are here to join Queen Gabrielle with her chosen one, Xena of Amphipolis. I trust there is no one who objects to this union?"
Even if anyone had objected, no one would dare to go against Xena, Warrior Princess. What Gabrielle couldn't see was Xena glaring into the crowd in case anyone was thinking about it.
"Queen Gabrielle and Xena have chosen to speak words from their heart instead of using the customary Amazon saying."
Gabrielle and Xena turned to face one another, hands still clasped. Gabrielle could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She took a deep breathe hoping it would help her to speak.
"Xena," Gabrielle began softly, "the first time I saw you, you took my breath away, not only because of your beauty but because of your strength, courage, and determination. I admire the person you have become. When I look in your eyes I can see the love and devotion you have for your family. You are what makes living worthwhile. You are my light, my life, and my inspiration. Everything I do, I do for you. I'll love you beyond the end of time." Gabrielle noticed one small, lone tear fall from Xena's eye. She reached up with a shaky hand and wiped it away.
"Gabrielle," Xena said in a husky voice, "when I met you, I was a hardened ex-warlord who cared for no one and no on cared for me. And then you became a part of my life, showing me how to love, how to live and how to laugh. You broke down the wall that I worked so hard to build. I am truly humbled by the love you have for me. I truly don't deserve you, and yet I can't imagine what life would be like without you or our children. I know our love will never die even when our bodies cease to exist. Gabrielle, everyday I spend with you makes me love you more than the day before."
Gabrielle couldn't hold back the tears any longer and soon they were falling freely down her face. Ephiny stepped forward trying to keep her emotions in.
"Before I proclaim this joining legal, Gabrielle would like to make a special presentation."
Gabrielle reached inside her pocket and took out the rings. She put them in the palm of her hand and held it out.
"Xena, as a token of my love for you, I would like you to wear this ring so everyone knows of our marriage."
Even the great Warrior Princess couldn't hold back the tears anymore and let them fall down her face, leaving a streak in their path. Gabrielle took Xena's ring and slid it on the ring finger of her left hand. She then held out her hand for Xena to take the other ring and do the same. She slid it onto Gabrielle's finger.
"As Co-Queen of the Amazon Nation, it is my honor to join together for all eternity, Queen Gabrielle of the Amazons and Xena of Amphipolis."
Everyone began to cheer loudly as Xena took Gabrielle into her arms and kissed her passionately. Ephiny was the first to congratulate the couple. Xena even let the Queen give her a hug and kiss.
"Let the celebration begin," proclaimed Ephiny.
Neither woman wanted to join in the celebrating but knew there was no way out of it. A feast was prepared in honor of the pair. A regent of guards escorted the two to the ceremony where they were shown to the head table. A large table filled with Gabrielle's favorite foods had been prepared. The Queen piled her plate up, sat down and began to feast. Xena laughed, watching the bard pack it away.
"Gabrielle, I don't know where you put it all."
"Probably someday I'll wake up and weigh 300 pounds."
"All the more to love."
The music started in full force. Various women began dancing with their partners. Xena stood and took Gabrielle's hand.
"Dance with me?"
"Xena, you know I'm not very good."
"I don't care, it's the only excuse I can use to get you into my arms until later."
That was all the invitation Gabrielle needed. She was up and locked in Xena's arms, gliding across the dance floor.
"Xena, let's go back to our hut."
"Gabrielle, you know we can't leave yet, everyone would be insulted."
As if on cue, Solari entered with a screaming Lycea. Gabrielle hurried over and took her daughter from Solari.
"Solari, what's wrong?"
"I think she misses her mothers."
Gabrielle began to talk soothingly to her daughter, and before long she was quiet in her mother's arms.
"Xena, I think we should take her back to our hut."
"I'll go tell Ephiny."
Xena walked off leaving Gabrielle with Solari.
"Gabrielle, I'm sorry, I know you wanted to enjoy your celebration."
Gabrielle winked and smiled at Solari. "Believe me, it's not a problem."
Xena returned and led the two out into the night air. The arrived back at their hut. Gabrielle gently placed Lycea into her crib, and rubbed her back until she went back to sleep. Gabrielle turned around and saw a very naked Xena laying on their pallet, with her hands behind her head.
"Is she all right?"
"I rubbed her back and she went right to sleep."
"Mhh, sounds nice."
Gabrielle crawled up onto the pallet and into Xena's waiting arms.
"You want me to rub your back and put you to sleep?"
"Sleep isn't what I had in mind, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle feigned innocence. "Just what do you have in mind?"
"This!" Xena rolled Gabrielle onto her back and began to remove her clothes. Once all her clothes were removed and tossed Xena began to kiss her favorite spot, Gabrielle's breasts.
Gabrielle awoke in the middle of the night still in Xena's arms. She looked up and saw loving blue eyes staring back.
Gabrielle snuggled into Xena's arms. She noticed the warrior kept looking at her ring.
"I take it you like the rings?"
"Gabrielle, they are beautiful."
Xena kissed her wife gently. That was all Gabrielle needed and she rolled on top of Xena and began planting kisses on her neck. Xena felt herself slipping as each kiss seared through her very soul.
"Oh Gabrielle," Xena moaned.
The bard moved down to Xena's breasts and spent long minutes sucking each nipple until they almost hurt. Xena felt as though her breasts were on fire from the attention being lavished on them.
"Gabrielle, please don't stop, please don't ever stop."
"Xena, are you begging?"
"Yes," came the husky reply.
"Wow, we should have gotten married sooner, I like this new side of you."
Gabrielle continued kissing her warrior, eliciting small moans from the older woman. She worked her way down to the very core of Xena, causing the warrior to buck and grind against Gabrielle's thigh. Xena was soaked in sweat and juices as Gabrielle sucked harder and harder. She felt a warm rush come away from her. Xena didn't know how much more she could take. Wanting and feeling the same, Gabrielle turned her body around so she was over Xena's mouth. Xena began sucking Gabrielle, causing the woman to scream Xena's name.
"Oh Xena, yes harder, harder," the bard moaned.
"Gabrielle, almost, I'm almost there," came the breathy response. "I can feel your tongue in me, yes, oh yes."
"I know love, just let me take you the rest of the way."
Gabrielle continued rubbing and sucking until Xena came to a masterful orgasm. Gabrielle followed right after. Gabrielle came up next to Xena and fell into her arms. Xena was so overwhelmed she began to sob. Gabrielle took her wife into her arms and spoke lovingly to her. Finally Xena let herself relax in her wife's embrace.
"Gabrielle, you've no idea what to do to me. I never thought that anyone could ever move me to the heights you do. I don't know what I did to deserve you, but I'm not complaining."
The two settled into each other's arms and were soon asleep. Xena woke first, she could tell it was still early. She looked down at the bard and then at her ring. Gabrielle's eyes fluttered open and smiled when she saw her wife.
"Hi," Gabrielle yawned.
"Hi yourself. Sleep well?"
"What little I got."
"Are you complaining?"
"Oh no, warrior, not at all."
"Gabrielle, I love you."
"Gabrielle grinned, "Really? I never would have guessed."
Xena tickled Gabrielle in the side, causing the bard to giggle.
"Hey, play nice."
"Don't I always?"
"Xena, I love you, don't ever doubt it."
"I won't. So what do you want to do today?"
"We're doing it."
"Gabrielle, you'll kill me."
"Yeah, but what a way to go." Gabrielle began to kiss Xena's stomach.
"Is this what marriage does to you Gabrielle?"
"Hey, if you weren't so beautiful and easy to love, I'd be able to keep my hands to myself."
"Come on bard, we need to check our daughter."
Gabrielle got out of bed and with Xena checked on their daughter. They found her awake and playing with a toy Solari had given her. Gabrielle reached down and caressed her little face. She looked up at her mother and laughed.
"Xena she's getting so big."
"Yeah, pretty soon, she'll be having her own children."
"Hey, don't push it Grandma."
"You're right, Grandma Xena, don't think I'm ready for that."
"I don't know, I kind of like it."
Xena reached down and picked up the happy bundle. She started to sing to her daughter, which made her coo.
"I see she has your musical ability."
"Come on let's get her fed."
Xena and Gabrielle went back to the bed so Gabrielle could feed Lycea. Xena took her usual place behind Gabrielle and sat there wondering how much longer these times would last. Even as an old woman, Xena would look back fondly to these times when she and Gabrielle would feed their childen together.
Gabrielle watched her daughter suckle and knew the time had come to visit her family. As much as she didn't want to she knew that her family was entitled to know about Lycea.
"Xena, I think I'm ready to visit my family."
"Are you sure?"
"No, but I can't put it off any longer."
Xena could sense Gabrielle's nervousness and began to stroke her arm. "I'm here for you."
"Always."
That night Xena and Gabrielle stayed awake talking about their hopes for the future and what they wanted for their children. They both agreed if the road became too harsh they would settle down and spend their time between Amphipolis and the Amazons. Gabrielle even queried Xena on the prospect of having another baby. Xena didn't think the gods would be kind enough to grant them another child but then again with the gods one never knew.
Morning found the trio back on the road headed towards Amphipolis. Gabrielle held Lycea for a good part of the journey telling her stories.
"Gabrielle, she doesn't understand what you're saying."
Gabrielle stopped walking and stared at Xena.
"What?"
"Xena you know very well our daughter is highly intelligent and understands every word we say to her."
Xena turned and started to walk on. "Whatever you say dear."
Lycea began to fuss and fidget, causing Gabrielle to laugh. "She wants me to continue with my story." As soon as Gabrielle started in on the story, Lycea settled down in her mothers arms. "I told you so."
"She just likes the sound of your voice, because she hears it so much."
"Very funny, warrior."
Xena was happy to be back out on the road and decided to stop early and delay their arrival to Amphipolis. She knew that Solan was in safe hands with Cyrene so there wasn't any hurry to get back. Xena took them to a hot spring where her tired muscles could relax. The proud warrior didn't want Gabrielle to know how much her muscles ached from their marathon session in bed. She had enjoyed every minute of their wedding night and sore muscles were a price she gladly paid.
While Gabrielle set up camp, Xena went fishing for dinner. She returned with two large fish, scaled and ready to cook. Gabrielle had started a fire and the vegetables were cooking. Lycea was on their bedroll happily waving her feet in the air. While waiting for everything to finish cooking, Gabrielle took one of her scrolls and began to write. Xena in the meantime was sharpening her sword. Each woman intent on her task, failed to notice Lycea crawl off, away from camp. Gabrielle went to turn the fish and noticed the empty bedroll. Panic swept through her like a raging river.
"Xena, Lycea is missing!"
Xena quickly stood up looked around and then grinned at Gabrielle.
"Xena!"
"Gabrielle, relax, Argo has her."
Argo came trotting into camp firmly holding a squirming Lycea in her strong jaw. She slowly and gently laid the baby down onto the bedroll and snickered.
"Well I'll be," Gabrielle exclaimed, "our own watch horse."
Xena walked over to the mare and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "Good girl. Looks like I'll be making a tether for our daughter," laughed Xena. Xena reached down and picked up her daughter and held her in front of her. "In the meantime, young lady, you and I are going to have a chat about scaring your mother."
Xena went to Argo's saddlebag and removed a rope, which she tied around a large tree and then the other end around Lycea's waist. She hated to tie the child up but the consequences of harm coming to her outweighed any discomfort the child might feel. She put Lycea back down on the bedroll. "Now try and get away."
Xena looked over at Gabrielle and could see she was still shaking. "C'mere."
Gabrielle went to outstretched arms and let them envelope her. "Xena, I was so scared when I looked over and saw Lycea missing."
"I know love."
"You trained Argo to go after her if she got away."
"I had to be sure if you and I were ever unable to get to Lycea, Argo would."
Gabrielle broke into a grin. "Xena, what didn't you think of?"
"Letting you in on what I'd done."
Gabrielle pulled the warrior into a fierce hug. The two women stayed that way until Gabrielle could smell the fish catching on.
"Xena, the fish."
"What fish."
"They're burning."
"Oh."
After dinner Xena and Gabrielle brought Lycea down to the warm spring. Xena tested the water making sure it wasn't too hot for her tender skin. Once satisfied the water was okay, the women quickly striped down and entered the warm water and sat down. With one arm she held Lycea and with the other put her arm around Gabrielle's shoulder and drew her close. She could feel the tension leave her tired muscles. Lycea happily splashed her little feet, making herself and her mothers laugh.
After Lycea had been put to bed, Xena and Gabrielle sat by the fire and cuddled. It wasn't often that Xena lay in Gabrielle's arms, usually it was the other way around. But tonight Xena needed to be held, and Gabrielle was more than willing to. Every once in a while Xena would hold up her hand and look at her ring. Gabrielle almost laughed out loud, but held it in, knowing Xena would get embarrassed. Since she first met Xena she had never known the older woman to be sentimental over an object. But all day long, Gabrielle watched Xena take sneak peaks at her hand.
"I still can't believe we're married, my bard."
"And I still can't believe you wanted me for your spouse."
"Wife, Gabrielle, you're my wife."
"Mmh, I like that." Gabrielle looked at Xena and grinned. "So that makes you my husband?"
"Wife, I'm your wife. And don't forget it, bard."
"Works for me. Besides, I didn't exactly have luck in the husband department. So maybe I'll have better luck with a wife."
"Count on it."
Xena leaned over and kissed Gabrielle, causing the younger woman to moan.
"See, I'm having better luck already."
"Yeah, why?"
"Because no one has ever made me moan the way you do."
Xena looked at her wife and grinned. "You wanna hear moaning, just you wait and see."
"Ooh, I'm counting on it."
Morning found the trio on the last leg of their journey. They were at the outskirts of Amphipolis when Xena saw Solan running towards them. Her first instinct was something was wrong. Upon further inspection she realized he was running because he was happy to see his parents. When Solan arrived, he found himself being swept off his feet.
"Mother!" the boy giggled as he looked down at Gabrielle from him seat on his mother's shoulders. "Hi Mum."
"Hello to you, up there."
"Mother, I hope I become as tall as you."
"Me too, you'd look funny traveling around on my shoulders all the time."
Solan laughed, then looked down at Gabrielle and winked. She knew that he had succeeded in the project he had been given.
"How's the arm?" Xena asked.
"Still sore. Grandma won't let me do anything. Are you married?"
"Yup," replied Xena.
"Neat!"
Gabrielle looked at Xena and shrugged her shoulders. "Neat. Is that good?" Gabrielle asked.
"Mum, of course it is."
Gabrielle smiled at her young son and winked. "Solan, would you please take Argo and your sister back to the inn? I want to take your mother on a detour."
"Sure!" Solan tried to hide the laugh he felt welling up inside.
Xena let the boy down onto the ground and handed him Argo's reins.
"Gabrielle?"
"What?" came the innocent reply.
"What are you up to?"
Gabrielle looked innocently at her wife, then winked at Solan. "Solan, please tell your Grandmother we'll be along in a few candlemarks. Lycea has been fed, she just needs a nap."
"Okay."
Solan started to walk off with Lycea and Argo in tow.
"Come on Xena."
"Solan, be careful with your sister," Xena yelled to the departing boy.
"Mother, I'm not going to do a backflip, if that's what you mean!"
"Xena, relax, Lycea is fine. Come on."
Gabrielle grabbed Xena's elbow and steered her towards their intended destination.
"Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
"Gabrielle, you know I hate surprises," the Warrior groaned as she gave her the most menacing look she could muster.
Undaunted by her wife's stare, Gabrielle continued pushing her love along until they came to the cabin. The cabin fairly large in size, needed work as well as the adjoining barn and corral.
"Well, here we are."
Xena tried not to let her irritation show. She hated guessing games and had little patience when she didn't know exactly what was going on. "And where is here?"
"Our cabin, remember?"
"Sure, yeah, of course." Xena's mind raced. What cabin?
Gabrielle knew from the tone of her voice that Xena didn't have any recollection of a cabin. "Honestly, Xena, you remember every thing that has ever happened to you, and you can't remember my telling you about this cabin?"
Xena vaguely remembered Gabrielle talking about a cabin, but she was engaged with Gabrielle at the time. A smirk came to her lips as she remembered what she was engaged with when the subject of a cabin arose.
Gabrielle stepped up onto the porch, which Xena saw needed boards nailed back in place, and even a few needed replacing. She looked up at Xena and smiled. Xena shuddered as she looked at her wife. She knew as long as she lived she would never tire looking into those blue-green eyes.
"Are you going to stare at me all day or can we go in?"
Xena shook her head, "ah sorry, what?"
"The cabin, shall we go in?"
"Sure." Xena opened the door and followed the bard in. What she saw took her breath away. In place in the living room was a couch, table and rocking chair. The cooking area, was filled with all the necessary utensils. Light blue cloth with orange and yellow swirls hung at the windows.
"Gabrielle, did you do all this?"
"Solan and your mother helped. Do you like it?"
"Of course, but where did you get the dinars for all of this?"
"I too have many skills warrior." Xena didn't know that every time Gabrielle earned dinars from her storytelling she managed to save some.
Xena swept Gabrielle into her strong arms and held her close. "I love you Gabrielle."
"I know Xena that this is just a place to stop when we want off the road."
Xena released her wife and looked at her. "I think I might want to stop often. Now come on, let's find the sleeping areas."
The two found the sleeping area. One rather large room had a big double bed, while the smaller sleeping room had a single bed and crib set up. Xena smiled down at Gabrielle.
"So do you want the bed or crib?" Xena joked.
"I don't care as long as you're in it."
"In that case." Xena swept the woman off her feet and carried her into the larger room and gently put her down on the bed. "Shall we check the bed out?"
"Perhaps we should just to make sure it will stand up to a lot of activity."
A candlemark later the two got out of bed and dressed. Gabrielle made her way to the kitchen area and admired all the of the utensils she had to cook with.
"Come on Warrior. let's go get our kids and spend the first night in our new home."
"You stay Gabrielle, I'll go get them."
"Then I'll get to work on dinner."
Gabrielle reached up and kissed Xena hard on the mouth.
"What's that for?"
"Insurance. I want to make sure you return."
"Count on it."
Xena turned on her heels and left the cabin. Gabrielle looked around her kitchen and found the needed ingredients for dinner. There was plenty of rabbit left over for a nice stew, and fresh vegetables that looked as if they had just been picked. While the stew was cooking Gabrielle started a fire in the fireplace. It was almost sunset and there was a chill in the air. Xena and the children finally entered the cabin. Solan had talked his mother's ear off about his new friends. She was pleased to see he had friends and was happy. He also talked non-stop about Cyrene. Another plus, he felt close to his grandmother. Xena told Solan of their impending visit to Poteidia.
Solan asked if he could stay behind with his new friends. Xena told him they would need to discuss it with Gabrielle.
Gabrielle cleared up from dinner while Solan and Xena went outside for a walk. This had turned into a nightly ritual, mother and son spending time alone before bed. They inspected the barn to see how much work it needed. Once satisfied Argo would be safe until proper repairs could be made, the two headed back to the cabin where they found Gabrielle sitting on the porch holding a very happy Lycea.
"Mum can I talk to you?"
"Of course Solan, always."
"Well, mother told me you want to go visit your family, but I'd like to stay here if I may."
Gabrielle looked to Xena for an answer. Just getting a smile, she decided to quiz the boy. "Why don't you want to go?"
"Oh it's not that I don't want to go, it's just I've made a lot of new friends, school is starting soon, and well-"
Solan began to get all flustered and red in the face. Gabrielle grinned at her young son knowing what was behind the red face.
"What's her name?"
Xena suddenly came to attention. A girl? Her son and a girl? Xena didn't think she was ready for this. She was thankful Gabrielle was here.
"Mum! I know, deep breath and start talking. Karianna, her name is Karianna."
"Is she pretty?"
"Yup."
Gabrielle glanced at Xena and saw the panic in her eyes. "Solan, your mother and I will discuss it and let you know tomorrow. Fair enough?"
"Do I have a choice?"
"No," Gabrielle laughed.
"Okay."
"Time for bed."
Xena picked the boy up and threw him over her shoulder. She returned a while later to Gabrielle who was still sitting on the porch with Lycea.
"I'll have to make you a porch seat." Xena sat down next to Gabrielle, put her arm around her wife and drew her close. She gently stroked Lycea's face.
"Xena?"
"Mmh?"
"Are you really happy?"
"Gabrielle, for the first time in my life, I can say I am truly happy."
"So when do you want to get back out on the road?"
"Gabrielle, I want to talk to you about that. I've been thinking about our life and the children, and all of a sudden I'm not in such a rush to be back out on the road."
"What?"
"I'm not ready to give up helping people, I'm just not sure I want to be out on the road so much. How does that sound to you?"
"I like the sound of that very much."
Gabrielle leaned over and planed a soft kiss on Xena's cheek. "So, what about Solan?"
"I've just found my son and now I'm losing him to a girl. I'm not sure I like it."
"Xena, let's invite her to dinner at mom's and do the parental sizing up thing."
"Okay."
Lycea was put to bed and the two stayed on the porch locked in each other's arms until Gabrielle began to doze off. Xena looked down at her wife and picked her up and brought her to their bedroom, where she carefully placed her on the bed. Gabrielle woke up as Xena was removing her leathers.
"Xena, the first night in our home."
"Mmh."
Gabrielle sat up and started to remove her top. Xena sat down next to her.
"Here, let me."
Xena helped Gabrielle out of her clothes and before long they were locked in each other's arms.
Mid afternoon the following day found the family at Cyrene's for a late lunch. Gabrielle retired to the kitchen to help Cyrene while Xena and Lycea chopped wood. Solan kept waiting for Karianna to arrive. He was nervous about his mother's meeting her and like his mother kept pacing around. Gabrielle fell into conversation with her mother-in-law while they cleaned up.
"Mom, can I ask you a question?"
"Of course daughter." Cyrene was pleased her daughter-in-law called her mom. She genuinely loved Gabrielle and was happy that Xena had found someone as special as Gabrielle.
"When you found out that Xena and I were more than friends, were you upset by it?"
"No child. I was pleased that Xena had finally found happiness, and pleased that you were the one to be a part of her life." Cyrene could see sadness cloud over the blue-green eyes looking at her. "Daughter, what is it?"
"My family, they don't know about Xena or Lycea."
"Are you worried they won't accept Lycea?"
"I'm worried they won't accept Xena as the mother of their grandchild."
"Gabrielle, no matter what happens with your family, I still love you. You are as much my daughter if I had given birth to you." Cyrene gave her daughter a tight hug.
Through tear filled eyes Gabrielle smiled at the older woman. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For being so special."
Dinner was a festive affair. Gabrielle even managed to get Xena to sing. The patrons were captivated by the
tall warrior who sang of love and devotion to her family. By the time she finished there wasn't a dry eye in the
inn. Xena sat down with a mug of port in her hand and took a big swig when Solan walked in with a very beautiful
young woman on his arm. The girl with long blonde hair tied back looked to be about seventeen. Poor Gabrielle,
who was sitting
across from Xena was on the receiving end of a mouthful of port that came rushing out of Xena's mouth.
"Xena! What in Tartarus?"
Xena continued to stare at Solan and the girl. Gabrielle turned around and saw what had made Xena loose her port.
"Xena, she's, she's-"
"Dead."
"Ah, Xena, let's talk about the dead part later."
Solan led Karianna over to his mother's. He was grinning from ear to ear, making Xena and Gabrielle nervous. Xena swung around and sat next to Gabrielle, and motioned for the two to sit. Xena glared at the young woman, trying to give her one of her intimidating glares. But the young girl just continued to smile at the pair. Gabrielle could tell by the look on her wife's face that the poor girl was in for it.
"I'd like you to both meet Karianna."
Karianna extended her hand to Xena who declined. Gabrielle, not forgetting her manners shook the young girls hand. "Mmh," Gabrielle thought, strong handshake, that's a good sign.
"I'm so pleased to finally meet Solan's parents. He's told me so much about you both, I feel as if I already know you."
"I bet you do," Xena hissed. She motioned for Gabrielle to take Solan and go home, while she spoke to Karianna.
"Solan, I need to get your sister home, would you please walk us back?"
"Oh Mum, do I have to? I'd like to stay here."
Xena stared at Solan and he knew his mother meant business. Gabrielle took Lycea and led Solan out of the inn, hoping that Xena would use control and not beat the girl to a pulp.
Xena bore her blue eyes right into Karianna's own. The girl never flinched. "She's not scared of me. Under normal circumstances I'd like that."
"So, my kid likes you."
"I think the world of him. He's such a nice, polite boy. I enjoy spending time with him."
Xena could feel her blood boil. It took all of her inner strength not to haul off and hit the girl. "Look, I don't know what kind of cheap thrills you get from being with my kid, but he's only twelve. So let me give you a word of advice. Stay away!"
Karianna began to laugh out loud.
"The last person to laugh at me, ended up dead."
"I'm sorry Xena, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing that you think I'm in love with Solan."
"You're not?"
"Of course not! He reminds me of my little brother." Suddenly the young girls brown eyes clouded over. "He drowned last summer."
"I'm sorry." Xena felt a wave of relief wash over her.
"Please believe me, I think of Solan as a little brother."
"Then you have a problem."
"Why?"
"I don't think he sees you as a sister type."
Xena's words hit Karianna, and she understood why the warrior was upset. "Oh no, what should I do? I don't want to hurt him."
"For starters you need to tell him the truth. He'll be upset, but he'll get over it."
"I promise I'll speak to him tomorrow after school."
"You're the teacher?"
"Yes I am."
"Wish we had teachers like you in my day."
Karianna looked at Xena and laughed.
During the trip home, Solan chatted non-stop about Karianna. Gabrielle laughed to herself and wondered if she spoke that much about Xena when they first met. Solan ran on ahead leaving Gabrielle and Lycea to slowly walk along and enjoy the nice day. Gabrielle could feel Xena's presence. She stopped walking to let the woman catch up.
"Hi Gabrielle." Xena said as she fell in step with Gabrielle. She took a laughing Lycea out of Gabrielle's arms. "Hi to you too, my little princess." Xena kissed Lycea's forehead.
"Xena, you didn't hurt Karianna did you?"
"False alarm Gabrielle. Karianna thinks of Solan as a brother."
"I guess we didn't handle that very well."
"Nope. Sorry about the port."
"Hey, not a problem. Tasted like a good year. Poor Solan, he's going to be upset when he finds out."
"I know."
"What do we do?"
"She's telling him tomorrow after school."
"Oh Xena, don't tell me, she's the teacher?"
"Yup."
"Poor kid."
"He'll get through it, we've all been there at one time or another. So, what do we do about letting him stay with Mother?"
"I hate to inflict my parents on him so soon."
"Gabrielle, he is their Grandchild."
"I know but let's get them used to Lycea and you before we spring Solan on them."
"Okay, it's settled. He stays with Mother."
The two walked on arm and arm to their new home. When they arrived, Solan was sitting on the porch waiting.
"Hey, what took you so long?"
Xena mimicking an old woman said "We're old, it takes longer."
Solan laughed at Xena. "Good one Mother. You could take out an entire army blindfolded, run 10 miles and take out another army one handed."
Xena ruffled Solan's hair. "Only on a bad day. Solan, your mother and I have decided to let you stay home with your Grandmother, but on one condition."
"Why don't I think I'm going to like this?"
"You are to stay with your Grandmother, help around the inn. No backflips, and no broken arms. Deal?"
Solan was beaming. "Deal!" The boy hugged his mother's the ran off to the barn to brush Argo.
It was mid morning before the trio was on their way. They had the cabin to close up, then get Solan to Cyrene's. Gabrielle felt nervous about her upcoming visit with her family, but knew it couldn't be put off any longer. It wasn't fair to them and it wasn't fair to Lycea. She was nervous about how they would take the news that they had a granddaughter, and she was married to Xena. On a good day they hated Xena, and now she was part of the family. Gabrielle barely said two words all afternoon. Xena could sense her wife's unease and decided to stop early to give her a chance to relax before arriving in Potidaea.
Dinner was a quiet affair. Gabrielle, who barely touched her dinner went through the motions as she ate and put Lycea down for the night. Xena decided to give her wife a night she wouldn't soon forget. Gabrielle was quietly working on her scrolls when Xena arrived back to camp from checking the perimeter. She sat down next to her soulmate and gently took the scroll and put it aside.
"Xena?" Gabrielle looked into her wife's face and saw nothing of the ruthless warrior that once took up residence. Instead she saw such love and tenderness. Gabrielle knew there wouldn't be any more writing this night.
Xena's voice was low and husky. "Gabrielle, I think you need a backrub to relieve the tension."
Xena helped Gabrielle up and led her over to their bedroll. "I think you'll be more comfortable without these on." She helped the bard remove her clothes and then quickly removed her leathers. The two women stood looking at one another, not saying a word. Suddenly Gabrielle needed to be touched and held. Xena knowing what Gabrielle needed took the slight woman into her strong arms and held her tightly.
"Come on, lie down on your stomach." Xena eased Gabrielle down onto the bedroll and straddled her. Gabrielle shuddered at the contact. Strong, calloused hands began working the knots out of Gabrielle's back and neck. The sensual movement of Xena's fingers working on her back made Gabrielle moan. Xena worked her way down Gabrielle's back stopping at her buttocks. She then leaned down and placed warm kisses on Gabrielle's neck.
Gabrielle was becoming more and more aroused by her warrior and the strong hands kneading and touching her skin. Gabrielle was losing her train of thought as desire and yearning began to over take her body.
"Xena, I, um, I think I, my back, I need to be on my back."
Xena let Gabrielle get onto her back and began to massage first one breast, then the other. She reached out for Xena's breast but found her hands being held over her head.
"No Gabrielle. This is all for you, just sit back and enjoy the ride. I want to feel you shake for me. I want to bring you over the edge and back."
Hours later the two fell exhausted into each other's arms. They stayed that way until morning light brought Xena out of morpheus. After finally getting Gabrielle up and ready to face the day, they broke camp and started on their way. Gabrielle reached up and kissed Xena on the cheek.
"What's that for?"
"For last night. You made me forget my problems."
"That was the plan."
Lycea began to cry and fuss until Xena took her into her arms.
"Hey, my little princess are you feeling your Mum's nervousness? Everything will be okay." Xena kissed her little daughter, then placed her in the carrier. "Looks like I'm going to have to make you another carrier, you're getting so big."
"Xena, were you big when you were little?"
"Excuse me?"
"I mean, were you tall for your age?"
Xena started to advance the smaller woman. "I was big, tall and mean."
"Now wait a minute Xena, I didn't mean-"
Xena started to chase Gabrielle who took off running. Xena was gaining on Gabrielle who quickly had a plan of action. Just as soon as the warrior neared Gabrielle, she stopped short causing Xena to plow into her, knocking both women to the ground.
"Gabrielle are you okay? Why did you just stop?"
Gabrelle put her arms around Xena's neck and held on. "Hey, if you can't beat em' join em."
Xena started to move in to kiss Gabrielle but instead began to tickle her.
"Hey, no fair!" Gabrielle giggled.
"Gabrielle, you know all's fair in love and tickling."
Candlemarks later the two were walking along holding hands when Gabrielle slowed her step. Xena felt frustrated that she couldn't ease Gabrielle's worries.
"Do you want to turn back?"
"Yes, but I can't."
The two walked on in silence stopping only to take care of Lycea. Finally they arrived in Potidaea by mid afternoon. Various town folk stopped and said hi to Gabrielle, admiring Lycea, all the while thinking she belonged to Xena.
"Gabrielle, I'll get my room, then take you on to your parents."
"What do you mean your room?"
"I thought you'd want to stay with your family."
"I do."
"I don't think they'll want me under their roof."
"Xena, you're my wife, my family, I sleep where you sleep."
Xena left Gabrielle and Lycea outside while she got them a room for the night. When she returned back she found Gabrielle pacing back and forth.
"Gabrielle, you're going to make Lycea dizzy."
Gabrielle handed Lycea to Xena, sighed, then started to walk off in the direction of her parents house.
"Don't be mad at Mum, she'll be herself in a few days."
They arrived outside of her parents home a few minutes later. Gabrielle stood and stared at the front door, momentarily unable to move. "Well, it's now or never." Every instinct told her the outcome would not be what she hoped for. Xena broke Gabrielle's though by knocking on the door. Moments later the door opened and they were met by Gabrielle's mother. Her face lit up when she saw her eldest daughter.
"Daughter, you've come home!"
Hecuba took Gabrielle in her arms, but not before noticing Xena and Lycea. Gabrielle couldn't see the glare her mother gave to Xena, but she felt the older woman stiffen.
"Warrior," came the icy tone.
"Mother, her name is Xena."
"Come in."
Everyone entered the home, Hecuba watching Xena's every movement. Even after all this time, she still disliked the woman who stole her daughter away.
"Mother, there's someone I want you to meet." Gabrielle took Lycea from Xena and handed her to Hecuba. "This is Lycea, your Granddaughter."
The look of shock on the older woman's face almost made Xena laugh out loud. "Wait till she hears the rest, she'll keel over," thought Xena.
"Granddaughter?"
"Yes mother."
"How? Who?" the older woman gasped. "Oh no, Perdicus! My poor daughter, left a widow with a small baby to care for."
Gabrielle looked to Xena for support, then took a deep breath. "No mother, Perdicus is not the father." Xena stepped forward and put her arm around Gabrielle. "Xena is."
"What?" came the shocked voice.
"Mother, I never should have married Perdicus. I didn't love him like a wife should. My heart belonged to another. On my wedding night I wished for Xena to be the mother of my child, and Artemis granted me my wish."
Hecuba just stared at her daughter waitng for her to break into a grin and claim it was all a joke. When the girl remained solemn, Hecuba knew she wasn't kidding.
"Xena and I are married."
Anger now filled the older woman. "You're what?"
"Mother, we are very much in love."
Quietly Hecuba handed Lycea back to Gabrielle, walked to the door and opened it wide. "Take you child and your whore, and get out of here! You are no child of mine."
Tears began to well up in Gabrielle's eyes. "Mother, she pleaded, you can't mean it."
"From today on, I only have one daughter, Lila."
Gabrielle felt shock waves surge through her body. If Xena hadn't been holding her, her legs would have buckled beneath her.
"I'm just glad your sister and father haven't gotten home yet." Hecuba shook her finger at Xena. "It's your fault, if you hadn''t taken my daughter away, she'd still be here."
"No mother, you're wrong. I still would have left, Xena or not. Xena is the other half of my soul. Without her by my side, life has no meaning, no vision."
Xena smiled at her wife, proud of her for speaking up to her mother. "Come on love."
"Mother, we're staying at the inn if you change your mind."
The walk back to the inn took forever as Gabrielle replayed the events in her mind. Once in their room she collapsed in a heap on the bed and let the tears fall. Xena quickly put Lyca down and was by her wife's side gently lifting her head onto her lap, and stroking her tear stained face. "Shh, love, everything will be okay."
"Xena, I can't believe my own mother said such awful things."
"I know, I'm sorry, it's all my fault."
"How do you figure that?"
"Well, if a certain bard hadn't stolen my heart and turned me into a human beng, things would have been different."
"No Xena, it's not your fault. I can't imagine my life without you, so don't even go there."
The two stayed in one another's embrace until sleep finally overtook them. Gabrielle awoke a few candlemarks later. Lycea was sitting in Xena's lap while Xena was sharpening her sword. Gabrielle smiled as she watched mother and daughter.
"One day this sword will be yours. You need to start learning how to properly take care of it. First thing is always make sure it's good and sharp. Never let it get too dull."
Gabrielle laughed out loud.
"What's so funny?"
"Xena, the sword is bigger than she is."
"So. She has to learn sometime."
"Yeah, I'm sure she's taking it all in."
"Of course she is."
"Just like when I tell her stories?"
"That's different."
Gabrielle got out of bed and went over to girls, kissing each one. "I love you both so much. Don't ever forget that."
"No regrets?"
"No, and don't ever ask that question again. Got that?"
"Got it. So, is my bard ready to eat?"
"I think I can manage a few mouthfuls."
"Be right back." Xena handed Gabrielle their daughter and left the room, returning a few minutes later with a large tray loaded with breads, fruits and port. Gabrielle placed Lycea on the floor and let her crawl around while she and and Xena ate.
"Xena, I'm so sorry."
"Gabrielle, you don't have anything to be sorry for. You've done nothing wrong. I only wish I could make the hurt go away."
Lycea crawled over to Gabrielle and looked up at both her mother's and said her first words, "Ma, Ma, Ma, Ma," and then giggled.
"Xena, she spoke!"
Xena rolled her eyes and grinned. "Well it's over now." Xena picked up her daughter and put her on her leg.
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?"
"Both my girls talking at once, it'll never be the same again."
Gabrielle poked Xena in the ribs causing Lycea to laugh. "Oh my poor warrior." For a brief moment Gabrielle forgot everything and was happy once again. Then everything washed back over her again like a wave hitting the shore.
"What is it love?"
"Xena, look at everything they're missing out on."
"I know, maybe someday they'll come around. But for now, it's been a long day, let's go back to bed and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be here before we know it."
Gabrielle put Lycea down and before long everyone was fast asleep. Gabrielle awoke and quietly got out of bed, careful not to wake Xena. She went over to her sleeping daughter and watched her.
"When I look at you my darling daughter, I know that I made the right decision. You're a product of a very special kind of love you're mother and I have for one another. And it's because of that love that my hope for you is to know only love not hatred and fear. I'm only sorry that my family is on the front line in regards to hate and fear. Lycea, never doubt the love I have for you and our family. I'll always be here for you, no matter what. I promise I'll never let you down, my little love."
Gabrielle crawled back into bed and felt big, strong arms wrapping themselves around her. "I love you Gabrielle."
"Did I wake you?"
"Can't sleep when you're not in my arms."
"Wow, you've got it bad warrior."
"You got that right bard, even if I am a whore." Xena snuggled closer to Gabrielle not leaving any space between the two.
"Xena, you know I don't think you're a whore."
"Relax Gabrielle, I've been called worse." Xena's head jerked up.
"Xena, what is it?"
"Grab your staff and go to Lycea, someone is coming."
Before Gabrielle could get out of bed, Xena was standing wiith sword drawn. Gabrielle grabbed her staff and stood poised, ready for action. Xena could hear movement directly outside the door and before the intruder had a chance to enter, she flung he door open and pushed the lone figure head first onto the floor.
"Hey!" came the voice.
"Lila?"
"Gabrielle, is that you?"
Xena lifted the prone body up off the floor. Gabrielle ran to her younger sister and embraced her.
"Lila, what are you doing here?"
"I heard you came home. I had to see you. I'm sorry mother was so cruel. Gabby, I don't feel the same way, you must believe me. I love you, you're my sister, nothing could ever change that."
Gabrielle felt her heart lighten, knowing her sister still loved her. "I do believe you. I love you too, little sister."
Lila looked at Xena and grinned. "I thought I was a goner."
"Sorry, Lila, instinct."
"Hey, I'd do the same in your boots, if I could wear your boots."
Xena laughed. Gabrielle and Lila had the same sense of humor. She wondered why the pretty young girl was still single.
"So, do I get to meet my niece?"
All of the commotion woke Lycea up and she was wide eyed as Gabrielle picked her up. "Lycea, meet your Aunt Lila."
Gabrielle handed Lycea to her sister. The two two hit it off right away, laughing and giggling at the silly faces Lila was making. Xena walked ver to Gabrielle and put an arm around her shoulder.
"Gabrielle, Xena, she's so beautiful."
"Of course she is."
"I overheard Mother and Father. Is it true, is she a gift from the gods?"
"Yes."
"Wow! Gabrielle I'm so glad you've found such happiness. I only wish I was as lucky as you two."
"You'll find someone Lila."
"Sure if Father doesn't chase them away."
Xena lit more candles to lighten the room and it was then that Xena and Gabrielle saw the big welt on Lila's face.
"Lila, what happened?"
Lila put her hand up to her face. "Oh that?" she laughed. "I wasn't watching where I was going and walked into a plank. I'd better get going before I get in trouble."
Lila handed Lycea back to Gabrielle, gave her a quick hug and left.
"Xena, do you think that bruise was an accident?"
"Do you?"
"No."
"Your father?"
"Probably. I hate leaving Lila alone with him. I'm afraid of what he is capable of doing to her."
"Gabrielle, how would you feel about taking Lila with us?"
"Oh Xena, yes!"
"Mother could certainly use the help, and you'd see her more often."
Gabrielle flew into Xena's arms. "What did I do to deserve you?"
"Oh no, I'm the one who should be saying that."
The two went back to bed and quickly fell asleep, where they stayed that way for the rest of the night. Morning found Xena up early. She slipped out of bed, checked on Lycea who was fast asleep sucking on her thumb. Xena dressed and headed out to the barn to check on Argo. Argo was happy to see her owner who brought her fresh oats to feed on. Knowing that Gabrielle and Lycea would sleep for a few more hours, Xena decided to take Argo out for a run, something they hadn't done for a while. "Hey girl, how about a nice long ride?" Argo snickered. "I take that as a yes." Xena kissed Argo, then picked up the saddle and started to put it on. The barn door opened and in walked Gabrielle.
"Morning."
Xena turned around and looked at her wife. "You're up early."
"I couldn't sleep."
"Where's Lycea?"
"She's not with you?"
"No I left you both asleep."
Gabrielle felt the panic over take her. "My baby, someone's stolen my baby."
Xena threw down the saddle and ran into the inn. She didnt have time to panic, she needed to think clearly to be able to get their child back. She went to the barkeep who was washing mugs. Gabrielle came running in behind Xena. Xena grabbed the startled man by the scruff of the neck and put her face in front of his. She bore her teeth and stared him down with steely blue eyes.
"Who's got my kid?"
"I don't know," the scared man squeaked.
"Wrong answer. You don't want to see me when I get really mad, so let's try this again. Who's got my kid?"
The shaking man not wanting to go against Xena, Warrior Princess decided living was better than the kind of death she"d put him through. Hector wasn"t that good a friend. He looked at Gabrielle and said, "her."
Xena turned around and looked at her distraught wife. "What?"
"Hector, he took the brat."
Xena released her hold on the man. "Come on Gabrielle" Before leaving Xena punched the man in the stomach. "Don't you ever call my kid a brat again, ya got that?"
The man nodded and ran off. Not wanting to waste time, Xena insisted they ride Argo. They stopped a short distance from the cabin and stayed out of view. Xena needed a minute to get her anger in check before entering the house and taking her daughter back. "Gabrielle, I want you to stay here."
"No I'm going with you."
"Look Gabrielle, I'll kill to get our daughter back, if I have to."
"I know."
The two women quietly walked up to the side of the house. The could hear Lycea crying and Hecuba trying to calm her down. "There, there little one, I don't wonder you're all worked up, with the kind of home life you've been subjected to. We'll take care of you."
"Hecuba, you wanted the child, but if you can't shut her up, I will."
Xena motioned for Gabrielle to follow her. She went to the front door and before Hecuba and Hector had a chance to react , Xena had broken the door down and was standing inside the home with her sword drawn.
"You've got something that belongs to us."
A trickle of fear passed through Hector. But soon anger got the best of him. He wasn't about to let this woman get the better of him. He grabbed Lycea from Hecuba and held her close.
"Gabrielle, you and your kind are sick. You don't deserve a child," Hector spat.
It took all of Gabrielle's power within to stay calm and not get agitated. She knew in any confrontation it was better to stay calm. "I'm sorry you feel that way, but Xena and I love each other and our child very much."
Lila entered the house and gasped when she saw the scene before her. "Oh Gabrielle!"
"Father, please hand Lycea to me."
Hecuba stepped closer to her husband. "No, she's ours now."
Lycea began to cry. "Shut her up!" In a flash Hector removed a small dagger from his pocket and held it up to Lycea's throat. Gabrielle felt her legs begin to sway as Lila put her around her sister to hold her up.
"Perhaps she's be better off without any of us," Hector said.
"No father please!" Gabrielle screamed.
Xena was waiting for the opening she would need to grab Lycea from her grandfather. She had to be careful, one wrong move and the dagger could be plunged into her little neck.
Lila stepped forward, putting aside her fear of Hector to help save Lycea. "Father, let her go right now. Do you really think you can go against Xena?"
Hector took the back of his hand and struck Lila in the face. The force of the blow caused Lila to fall to the floor and hit her head. Gabrielle helped her sister up and saw the blood pouring from a cut on her forhead. Unwilling to take anymore, Xena let out with her war cry and with one hand knocked the knife out of Hector's hand and with the other pulled Lycea to safety.
"Gabrielle, take Lycea and Lila outside," Xena yelled.
"Xena, please don't hurt them."
"Out now!" the warrior yelled.
Gabrielle led her sister outside to wait for Xena.
"This is your lucky day Hector."
"Why's that warrior?"
"I'm not gonna kill you cos my wife asked me not to."
Hector spit on Xena. "Wife huh? You two are sick."
Xena pulled Hector into a head lock and hissed into his face. "Remember this. If you ever try to hurt my family again, I'll kill you. Ya got that?" Just to make sure he knew she meant business, Xena punched him hard in the stomach. The force of the blow caused the older man to fall doubled up onto the floor. The last thing Xena saw as she left the house was Hecuba running to her husband's side. Xena found everyone outside with Argo. Gabrielle was holding Lycea while Like sat on the ground holding her head. Xena went over to her daughter and checked her for injury. Seeing that she was okay, she turned her attention to Lila.
"Lila, are you okay?" Xena put a reassuring hand on her sister-in- laws shoulder.
"I'm okay, just a little shaken."
Gabrielle turned and looked at Xena. "Xena how could I not have heard him enter our room?"
"Gabrielle, he didn't pose a threat. You didn't sense any danger."
"Never again. From now on he is a threat to my family."
Lila shakily stood and started back to the house. Gabrielle grabbed her arm. "Lila, where do you think you're going?"
"Gabs I have to go back."
"No you don't."
"Gabrielle, you have Xena, I have no place to go."
Xena stepped forward and put her arm around Lila's shoulder. "Lila, when I married Gabrielle you became my family. I'm not letting you go back there to be hurt again. You're coming with us."
"Are you sure?"
"Lila, one thing you'll learn about me, I never say what I don't mean."
Gabrielle finally got Lila to sleep after spending hours getting her to open up about how abusive their father had been. Xena, who was sitting in a chair held out her arms to her wife. Gabrielle willingly sat down on her wife's lap, happy to be held.
"Oh Xena, poor Lila, if only I had known what was going on."
"She'll be fine. She has us, and mother. She'll make new friends in no time."
"You know, I'm sorry this all happened, but I'm not sorry we have a beautiful daughter. And I'm not sorry I married you, even if it meant losing my parents. I am sorry that my parents will miss out on seeing their granddaughter grow into the fine woman she will become."
"Maybe someday, Gabrielle, maybe someday."
"Maybe." Gabrielle knew her parents would never come around no matter how much she wished it.
The two women sat together for the rest of the night. Xena didn't want to sleep in case Hector decided to pay a visit. Morning came too soon for Lila who was still exhaused both physically and emotionally. She helped Xena pack up Argo while Gabrielle tended to Lycea. Lycea however had other plans, she wanted down on the floor. Gabrielle laughed at her daughter.
"Just like your mother, can't sit still for five minutes."
Gabrielle gently placed her daughter down on the floor and let her crawl around. With nothing to do until Xena got back, Gabrielle decided to join Lycea and play. Lycea was reduced to giggles as she watched her mother crawl around the floor and chase her. Xena could hear the laughter from out in the hallway as she approached the room. She smiled as she opened the door and saw mother and daughter on the floor playing. The sight of the two made Xena's heart swell with pride.
"Hey, are you two about ready?"
The pair ignored Xena. "Come on you two, Lila and Argo are waiting." Still no reply. "Well, if you can't beat em' join em." Soon the mighty warrior princess was on the floor chasing after her wife and daughter. Lycea began to laugh so hard she collapsed on the floor in a heap of giggles.
"Gabrielle, we'd better get going."
Xena lifted her daughter off the floor and helf out her hand to Gabrielle. She put her free arm around Gabrielle and pulled her close.
"I love you Gabrielle, heart and soul."
"I love you too my big dumb warrior."
"Big dumb warrior, huh? Why's that?"
"Cos you're dumb enough to put up with me."
"For a lifetime and beyond."
The two women kissed, then went outside to a waiting Lila and Argo.
The group set off to Amphipolis, and for Lila, the beginning of a new life.
The End
Well kids, this is it. I haven't written a Part II and won't unless I hear from you. It's in your hands. Do you want to see a grown up Lycea?
Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me. I appreciate the encouragement I received, and the new friends I made.
