A STORY OF ROMANTIC ADVENTURE.
I would like to dedicate this Story to my best friends Tyler, Morgan and Pam.
The time and place of this story is unimportant. The inhabitants who live there today, deny these events ever
took place; their national pride is at stake. They swear a woman could never…would never…well you can read this
tale and judge for yourself.
A splendid black coach, covered with gold and silver trim, pulled by four white horses, sped down the dirt path.
A small troop of imperial cavalry escorted the coach, for inside was the royal Princess Alexandria. She was 15
years old, a petite girl, with stunning blue eyes and long golden hair. The Lady Rebecca attended the princess,
the rest of the royal ladies were left at home.
The Princess sighed and looked out the window. “Oh Rebecca…it is so sad that I must marry. I see no advantage in
being of royal blood when I am forced to wed a complete stranger.”
“Princess it is a great honor to marry Prince Claude. He will learn to love you in time. And you will learn to
love him. Once you start having babies, you will be too busy to worry about anything else.”
“Dear God…I DON’T want to have babies!” Alexandria moaned.
The Lady Rebecca looked down her nose at the Princess. She had no patience for spoiled children. “Forgive me but
you are being ridiculous! If your mother had lived she could have explained these things to you. I fear the King
left you sadly wanting in these areas.”
Princess Alexandria mumbled under her breath. “This woman doesn’t want babies.”
The coach jerked violently as the horses suddenly took off at a frantic gallop. The air was filled with sounds
of men yelling and swords clanking. The princess looked out the window and Lady Rebecca screamed in fear. A band
of savage robbers attacked the imperial guard. The soldiers fought valiantly but the outlaws soon overwhelmed them.
The robber chief was a big man, well over six feet, with broad shoulders and a muscular build. He had a thick mane
of black hair and his green eyes glittered with intelligence. His name was Steven, and he was no peasant. Just
a noble who had lost his title and lands due to an unfortunate argument with a powerful Duke.
The soldiers were tied tightly with rope and the robbers surrounded the coach. The women were forced to stand in
front of the robbers. His men stared at the ladies with lust in their eyes, but they knew better than to incur
Steven’s wrath.
Steven smiled. “You have done well my lads. This royal wench will fetch us a good price.”
Princess Alexandria pulled out a hidden dagger. After all these were dangerous times.
“I am no wench! Touch me and you die!”
Lady Rebecca chose this very moment to faint. The robbers pulled her out of the way and Steven had a fight on his
hands.
“This is very unlady like behavior on your part.” Steven grinned quite unafraid of her. “I have no wish to harm
you…but you will obey me.” He commanded. “ Put the dagger down!”
“Burn in hell you dog!” Alexandria spat at him.
“In truth you are a wildcat! However I have no time to play with you. We must be off.”
Steven bent down and grabbed a handful of dirt, which he threw into the Princess’s eyes. As she staggered back,
he kicked the dagger out of her hand. She was securely tied and put on a horse. The soldiers and Lady Rebecca were
left at the coach. The robbers galloped off into the gloomy forest. They rode until darkness fell and then made
camp. Princess Alexandria was well used to riding, but the saddle she sat on was thin and uncomfortable, in short
her royal butt was aching. Stiffly she got off the horse and fell down, cursing the men roundly.
“We must do something about that language you use.” Laughed Steven. “You will corrupt my men.”
They set up a small tent, and put blankets down for her to sleep on. Steven pushed Alexandria into the tent.
“Take off your dress, from now on you will wear these boy’s clothes.”
“I will not undress in front of you!”
Steven grabbed the Princess and forced her to look at him.
“No one in this camp will molest you. I give you my word of honor on that! We are not like your fiancée
Prince Claude who finds amusement in raping young peasant girls!”
Tears of frustration spring to Alexandria’s eyes. “My father is making me marry him! I have never even seen Prince
Claude!”
“He is an evil, repulsive toad! And if our paths should ever meet, I would kill him without hesitation.” Steven
swore.
Alexandria fell to her knees and begged him. “Then let me go, I will see you get paid. I have no wish to wed a
toad!”
“Ahhh…you ask the impossible. It’s not only gold that I’m after. Now hush and go to bed.” Steven grinned at her
mysteriously.
In the palace Prince Claude also slept. The kidnapping of his intended did not disturb him greatly. His spies had
been sent out to glean information and it was just a matter of time before they would locate the Princess. Then
he would act swiftly and without mercy. When morning came his bodyguard woke him up. Two young girls who had shared
the Prince’s bed were sent back to the kitchen. Claude dressed and went to meet his advisors. His noble’s waited
nervously for him, Claude’s bad temper was well known.
The Prince entered the room, strutting like a peacock. He was not an attractive man, his bloated body the result
of much excess. He sat on the throne and addressed the assembly.
“My father, the King, has given me complete authority to rescue the Princess Alexandria.” Claude glared at his
nobles. “So what news do you have for me?”
The captain of the guards bowed to Claude. “My Prince, we have questioned the soldiers who guarded the Princess
and the Lady Rebecca. We feel sure it is the work of the outlaw named Steven.”
The Prince sneered. “I want the man found. See to it! As for those cowardly soldiers, I want them executed! Today!”
The people in the room gasped in horror. The captain protested.
“My Prince, they are good and loyal men. Killing them would be a mistake.”
“MISTAKE! MISTAKE! You DARE question me? I’ll have your head for that captain!”
The chief minister stepped forward. “Prince Claude… let us deal with this matter. This is a tedious business and
not worthy of your notice. We shall do all that you require. Now if I may, let me present these twins for your
amusement.”
He pushed two girls forward, identical in every way. The Prince licked his fat lips.
“Send them to my room. Very well minister, I give you the right to conduct the search. It is true that I should
not have to sink to such a mundane task. But do not fail me!”
The Prince stalked out and the minister took the captain by the arm.
“I cannot save the soldiers, but you will not die. A horse will be provided and I suggest you ride long and hard
before stopping.”
Gratefully the captain shook his hand. “Minister…please do all you can for my men. They don’t deserve death.”
“They were doomed from the very start. Even now as you look in the courtyard, you will see their bodies being carted
off. They were put to the sword as soon as the Prince ordered it.”
“God Damn that evil brute! I’ll kill him myself for this!”
The minister attempted to calm him. “Hush Captain hush. You can do nothing. One day Prince Claude will have to
atone for his sins, but now is not the time. Flee or he will surely put you in a grave.”
Steven rudely awakened Princess Alexandria. She was given water and porridge for breakfast. Then the robbers mounted
their horses and rode east. Riding in boy’s clothes was much easier but she began to wonder how far they were going
to go. They crossed several streams, and rode through a valley and up a mountain and then down again. Princess
Alexandria enjoyed her journey. Technically she was a prisoner but Alexandria felt free of the restrictions and
rules she was forced to follow as a Princess. She tried very hard to keep a smile from her lips; it wouldn’t do
for Steven to see that she was enjoying herself. Finally they came to a beautiful meadow. A huge ancient oak stood
proudly in the middle of this meadow. Beyond the oak, towards the edge of the forest were cleverly disguised huts.
One of Steven’s men blew a series of notes on his horn. Men, women and children came out of the huts and welcomed
the band of robbers.
The Princess got off her horse and stood alone as Steven greeted his wife and children. His wife, Helen was a strong,
proud woman. She looked at the Princess, curious about the woman who was to marry the evil Prince Claude. Three
young boys, looking like miniature copies of Steven, grinned mischievously at her.
Steven said. “You will be well treated, but you must promise me not to escape.”
“I told you I have no wish marry Prince Claude. Therefore why should I try and escape?” Alexandria boldly replied.
“Mmm…well I’m not sure that I can trust you. My little imps here will keep an eye on you.”
Helen led her husband into their hut, Alexandria followed. The boys unloaded the horses. Then they all sat down
to their evening meal. Helen served a delicious roast of venison, with apples. The boys eagerly questioned their
father about the raid.
Their mother insisted on some quiet. “Boys…please let your father eat in peace. We must treat our guest with respect,
show your proper manners.”
Steven humored his boys. “After a wild and fierce battle we captured this wildcat sitting at our table. She uses
horrible language but I think she has a good heart.”
The boys laughed and Helen ordered them to bed.
“Princess, we have some gowns that might fit you. You may search through this wooden chest, and take what you like.
We have no need of fancy silk dresses here, but you might enjoy them.”
Alexandria shook her head. “Thank you lady. But I am comfortable in these clothes, and I will keep them.”
Steven escorted the Princess to the hut next to his. “My boys usually sleep here, but you need some privacy due
to a lady of your station. I must warn you again. Don’t try and escape, these woods are dangerous and I have no
wish to see harm come to you.”
Her bed was comfortable and the Princess fell into a deep sleep. Upon awakening she noticed a fresh set of boys
clothes folded on the end of her bed. Helen had left them for her. The days went by swiftly and Alexandria found
herself bonding to Steven and his family. She enjoyed hunting rabbits with the boys and racing their ponies across
the meadow. The boys were her constant companions, and their antics never left room for her to be bored.
But life was not all fun and games. A constant watch had to be maintained for the King’s soldiers. Various people
drifted in from time to time, giving Steven news of the world. Alexandria learned of the execution of her soldiers
and was sick at heart. She resolved to make Claude suffer for that evil act.
Alexandria wondered when Steven was going to send her to Claude. She was in no hurry to meet her fiancé.
As a matter of fact she was more determined than ever, NOT to marry him. One afternoon a stranger arrived. A slender
youth rode in on a black stallion. The boys deserted Alexandria without a backward glance. Shouting as they ran
towards the youth.
“Kat’s here! Mother, Father, Kat’s here!”
The stranger dismounted, and greeted Steven and his family. Obviously they were great friends. Alexandria felt
a little jealous; she was completely ignored by everyone. She walked towards the family and Steven took the youth
by the arm and left. Helen told her that the stranger had brought great news.
Burning with curiosity she asked Helen. “But who is he? I heard the boys call him Kat.”
Helen gave her a sympathetic smile. “Yes, Kat is an old friend of ours.”
“Who is he?”
“Now we must have some secrets from you. I can not tell you more.”
Helen went off to prepare dinner and Alexandria was left frustrated and alone. Steven reappeared with Kat and they
went into his hut. She followed them and sat by the fire.
Kat looked at her with a penetrating stare. “So this is the wench, well she should make Claude very happy.”
“The problem is that we have become quite attached to her and I don’t want that bastard to have her.” Steven grinned
at Alexandria.
Alexandria felt her heart soar. Perhaps there was some hope after all.
“Thank you Steven. I will see that you are well rewarded.”
“It’s been a pleasure. Why you are like our own daughter now.” Said Helen.
Kat jumped up, and protested loudly. “This can not be! I need this wench to foil Claude’s plans.”
“No Kat.” Steven firmly said. “We shall find another way to defeat Claude. I will not put this girl in danger.”
Dinner was served; they sat quietly and ate. Kat was angry but knew better than to argue with Steven. Alexandria
sensed the hostility and she was glad when the meal was finally over. She told Helen that she was going to her
hut.
“Wait a moment. Kat will be sharing the hut with you tonight.”
Neither Kat nor Alexandria was happy with this news. There was a long moment of uncomfortable silence but Kat didn’t
say a word, and then the girls left for the hut.
“You can sleep over there and don’t even think of trying to touch me. I am a princess and will not stand to be
toyed with by a commoner.” Alexandria pointed to the bed in the corner.
Kat’s laughter filled the room. “Touching you is the last thing on my mind.”
“Well…” Alexandria said haughtily. “See to it that you stay on your side of the room”
Alexandria felt uncomfortable sharing her quarters with a stranger; she didn’t undress, preferring to sleep in
her clothes. She noticed Kat did the same. Later, much later the sound of crying woke her. Kat was thrashing about
on the bed, obviously having a nightmare. Alexandria rose and went over thinking to comfort the youth, she touched
Kat’s arm. Instantly Kat threw her to the floor and held a dagger to Alexandria’s throat.
She sobbed with fear. “Kat, please don’t kill me!”
Half asleep Kat looked at the dagger and then dropped it to the ground. “Oh God! Please forgive me Princess. My
soul is tormented by dreams of death!”
Kat rolled off of Alexandria and curled up into a ball on the floor. Crying tears of sorrow. Alexandria stared
at Kat…something was strange. First the feel of their warm bodies, then the tears streaming down Kat’s face, looking
so vulnerable.
“You..you…you are a woman!” Stuttered Alexandria.
She sat up and nodded her head. “Yes. My name is Katherine and I am the sister of Prince Claude.”
Alexandria was stunned. “How do you know Steven? You are a princess and he is an outlaw, that is a strange relationship.”
“He kidnapped me while I was out hunting with my hawks. Steven impressed me with his nerve and valor so I helped
him rob my brother. He trusted me enough to introduce me to his family and we became friends.”
“But why do you hate your brother?”
Kat laughed bitterly. “When you meet Claude you will understand. He is an evil and cruel man. After a drink or
two he will force himself on any woman…including his own sister!”
“Kat that is barbaric! Why didn’t your father protect you from his advances? I wonder why my father was so insistent
I marry him? I refuse to believe he would knowingly wed me to such a beast!”
“You truly are an innocent. My father is proud of Claude and your father needed my father’s gold.”
“NO! That cannot be true. My father is a good man.” Alexandria protested loudly.
I have no wish to hurt you, but he did value gold more than your welfare.”
They talked until the morning light filled the room, eager to learn everything about each other. An instant bond
formed between them. Like sisters only more so, because Alexandria was sure she loved Kat. She had led a lonely
life; after her mother died she had no real friends, just people eager to curry favor with the King. No one she
could trust. Alexandria admired Kat’s nerve and the way she seemed to live life on her own terms. Kat was only
a year older, but seemed so much more mature.
Kat left the hut and wandered down to the creek. Her thoughts were in a turmoil, she didn’t know what to think
about Alexandria. The original plan was to ransom Alexandria for gold and jewels. The entire robber band desired
to find a safer place to live and for this they needed gold. Now for the first time in her life Kat was feeling
true love. Oh she had slept with women before but love had never entered her heart. Indeed it was her French maid
that taught her the joys of making love to a woman. But Kat had always been in control of her heart. Now all of
that had changed. At first Kat felt terrified at this change in herself, she wondered exactly when she had lost
control of her emotions. But Kat had little choice but to accept things the way they were. Besides there was no
doubt in her heart that she loved Alexandria very much.
For the next couple of days Kat romanced Alexandria. Bringing her wildflowers, showing her the beauty of the surrounding
countryside. Kat wanted to spend every moment with Alexandria but at times the boys were allowed to accompany them.
They rode their ponies across the meadow into the woods on hunting trips. Coming back with deer, rabbits and pheasant.
The whole robber band ate well; there was no starvation in their valley. If someone needed food, they were given
food. They shared everything. This amazed Alexandria, because in her father’s Kingdom she was used to seeing beggars
starving in the street.
Kat explained. “Helen used to cook for us all. Now we have so many in our camp the chores are divided up. Everyone
contributes something here. We have candle makers, women who sew clothes for us, a blacksmith, a few bow and arrow
makers, and both men and women are trained to fight.”
At night by the campfire the robber band would tell tales of adventure and sing songs. Alexandria shyly stood up
and sang a wonderful song of love. Her soft, sweet voice captivated everyone. She glanced over at Kat and their
eyes locked. Kat took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Then she walked over to their hut, in no particular hurry.
Alexandria bade Steven and Helen a good night and then joined her friend.
Kat sat at the small table, and was carving a heart into the wood with her dagger. She smiled when Alexandria entered
the door.
“Truly you do have a sweet, musical voice. I like your singing very much!”
Impulsively Alexandria leaned over and kissed Kat. “I want us to always be friends.”
Kat seemed uncomfortable. “Umm…I don’t wish to hide anything from you. When I look at you I see such beauty it
blinds me. I want more than just friendship…do you understand?”
Alexandria may have been a virgin but she knew exactly what Kat meant. Her heart beat faster and faster and she
threw caution to the wind. No man had ever filled her heart with excitement the way Kat did. Once more she kissed
Kat softly on the lips.
Gently Kat pushed Alexandria away. “I want you to be sure…”
“Oh Kat, I am! I am truly sure this is what I yearn for.”
Kat held Alexandria’s hand. “I want to love you … I wish I could give you gold and silks and perfumes. Instead
all I can offer you is me.”
Alexandria’s eyes filled with tears. “All I want is you. Nothing more.”
They hugged each other tightly, and their kisses became more insistent. Their tongues met and danced the dance
of passion. Kat’s hands roamed over Alexandria’s body, exploring, touching and caressing. Soon the girls were naked,
making love to each other. Alexandria cried out in wonder, she felt as if her body was on fire. Kat’s fingers gently
massaged her and then with her tongue she knowingly brought Alexandria to the summit of her first orgasm. Alexandria
exploded into a frenzy; her body shook with the throes of passion. She collapsed, sobbing with relief. There was
no going back now…she belonged heart and soul to Kat.
They ate breakfast with Helen and Steven. The boys had left early to hunt rabbits. Steven stared at the girls then
he smiled. “I heard some strange noises coming from your hut, it sounded like two wildcats were mating in there.”
Helen hit him on the back of the head. “Stop that! I think its wonderful they like each other.”
The girls blushed bright red, and then Kat reached out and held Alexandria’s hand. “Yes, Steven I care for Alexandria.
And I very much want to keep her out of Claude’s hands.”
“I need to think on this. We must plan carefully for your brother is as cunning as a fox!” Steven declared.
Helen shooed them out of the hut. “All of this can wait. Let the girls enjoy their time together. Who knows how
long it will last.”
Kat and Alexandria walked out into the meadow and gathered wildflowers to give to Helen. Kat wove a chain of daisies,
which she put around Alexandria’s neck. The girls traded kisses and with their eyes they promised each other much
more.
This was the time Prince Claude’s soldiers picked to attack. Shouting their battle cries they rode into the meadow,
swords flashing in the sun. Cutting down the unfortunates who couldn’t get out of the way. Men, women, children,
it didn’t matter, all they encountered were slaughtered. Immediately Kat reacted, and grabbed two horses. Putting
Alexandria on one, then she yelled out to Steven. He had a secret escape tunnel in his hut, and was hurrying his
family down it. He called out to the girls to run. Kat sprang on her horse and they galloped madly across the meadow.
An arrow whistled through the air and hit Alexandria’s horse, it bucked madly and she fell hard to the ground.
Kat pulled up her horse and turned to rescue Alexandria. But it was too late, the soldiers were all over her.
Alexandria cried out. “For God’s sake Kat save yourself! I am done for!”
Even though arrows flew at her, Kat hesitated. But there was nothing she could do, she had no weapons. One of the
soldiers charged at her with raised sword. Crying tears of rage, Kat kicked her horse and fled into the forest.
Back at the palace Claude awaited his bride. When the soldiers brought her before him, he sneered in contempt.
“This is the wench? Are you sure this is Princess Alexandria?” He squeezed her arm and looked down her blouse.
“Why she is so thin, and her tits are far too small. I don’t want to marry her!”
Alexandria glared at the Prince with hate in her eyes. “You evil lecher! I will never marry you! I despise you
with all my heart.”
The minister stepped forward. “My Prince, you have to marry this girl. Your father the King has commanded it. It
is time this girl was wed and bred, we need a royal heir.”
The minister ordered the ladies of the court to clean Alexandria and to dress her in a royal gown. The wedding
was to take place in two hours. While the palace bustled with activity, the Prince spied a woman walking down the
palace hallway. She was a lady of nobility, but that didn’t save her. The Prince brutally assaulted her. Her pitiful
screams could be heard echoing down the hall. Everyone, servants and nobles alike, averted their eyes, covered
their ears and pretended not to hear the horrible cries.
Alexandria was dragged to the alter. The ladies had dressed her in a beautiful white gown, with veil. She put up
such a fight; they bound her with silk ropes. The priest was there, the Prince was there, and his father the King
was also present. Then to her horror her own father walked in the room.
He commanded her. “Alexandria, you must stop this unseemly behavior. Accept your fate, you will marry Prince Claude.”
With tears in her eyes she stared at her father, pleading for mercy. “You want me to marry this man…knowing what
a monster he is?”
“He will learn to accept the responsibilities of a married man. His youthful indiscretions will be overlooked.
Claude will be King one day, he needs a wife and heir to carry on his family name.”
“Father…as of this moment I am no longer your daughter. I reject you and all that you stand for.” She stood proud
and unafraid.
“Daughter, you are overwrought. In time you will see that I am right. Once you have a babe at your breast, you
will be happy.”
Alexandria glared at her father. “I will kill myself before I let that bastard touch me!”
He slapped her hard across the face. Alexandria fell to the floor. The priest and Claude came forward and the ceremony
began. The minister pulled Alexandria to her feet and firmly held her. When it was time for her to say I do, she
refused. Her father stepped forward.
“The Princess has suffered a shock from being kidnapped, as her father I have the authorization to answer for her.
She happily agrees to marry Prince Claude.”
Alexandria screamed loudly as the Priest uttered the words…”I now pronounce you man and wife.” Soldiers dragged
her kicking and screaming to Claude’s room. They tied her tightly to the bedposts and then left. Struggling and
pulling at the ropes Alexandria cursed her fate. Claude entered the room; he ripped her dress open, grabbed her
breasts and cruelly pinched her nipples. Alexandria writhed in pain.
“You will learn to be an obedient wife, or you will suffer.”
She screamed. “NEVER! I will NEVER submit!”
Claude laughed and disrobed. He noticed a flask of wine and fresh bread on the table by the bed. Grabbing the wine
he drank deeply. Taking a candle, he let the hot wax drip down on Alexandria , burning her breast.
He sneered at her. “Oh…I think I can convince you to obey me. You see I have had much practice with reluctant women.
They all beg me in the end to take them.”
Claude took a whip; he cracked it a few times in the air before he turned his attention to Alexandria. Behind him
the tapestry on the wall moved; Kat and the Captain of the guards stepped into the room.
“GOD DAMN you brother! You have sunk so low, you are no longer a man. The devil himself would despise you!”
Claude yelled for his guards and attacked Kat with the whip. She dodged the lash and threw her dagger. Claude staggered
back as the dagger pierced his flesh. The guards pounded at the door, but they could not get in. The door had been
reinforced and a strong bar lay across it. Claude was responsible for that, because he had not wanted his perverse
games interrupted.
Kat watched her brother roll on the floor, bleeding profusely. She hardened her heart for the unpleasant task ahead.
Claude grabbed the dagger and pulled it out, screaming as he did so. But now he was armed and he rose to his feet.
He laughed the laugh of an insane man. “My sister. Now is your time to die!”
The Captain stepped in front of Kat shielding her with his body. “No more shall you cause pain and sorrow. I am
going to kill you…for one of the soldiers you executed was my son!”
Claude shook his head, his vision was blurred and his body weak. He lost control of his limbs and fell hard to
the floor. No, he was not dead. His wine had been drugged and it had finally taken effect.
Kat rushed over and cut Alexandria free from her ropes. Alexandria kissed her fiercely upon the mouth. She wept
in relief.
“I owe you a debt I can never repay. Thank you for saving my life.”
Kat shook her head. “You would have done the same for me. I love you with all my heart.”
“I love and adore you.” She kissed Kat again. “We must escape, yet we are trapped here!”
“I was raised in this palace and know all the secret passages.”
The Captain bowed to Kat and Alexandria. “Princess Katherine I must have my vengeance. Give me leave to take your
brother’s head.”
Kat solemnly nodded to the grief stricken man. “Yes, justice must prevail. Claude will atone for his sins with
his life. You may take his head with my blessing.”
Alexandria moaned. “I know …he needs to die, deserves to die…yet I can not watch you kill him.” She turned away
and faced the wall.
Kat walked over to her brother and examined him. His wound was not serious, he would live unless something was
done. The Captain drew his long, sharp sword. Raised it over his head and then swiftly brought it down and cut
Claude’s head off. His blood spurted forth and sprayed Kat and the Captain. Kat turned away and violently threw
up. The deed was done. The Prince’s guards were chopping at the door with their axes , it was only a matter of
time before they would enter the room.
Alexandria put a blanket over the body and hugged her friend. She dressed in a tunic of Claude’s, it was huge but
there was nothing else to wear.
“Kat we need to leave now!”
The Captain bowed to the ladies again. “It is time we part ways. I will divert these guards and you will escape.”
“But they will kill you!” Alexandria screamed at him. “You must leave with us!”
“No…I go to join my son.”
She pushed Kat towards the tapestry; and they entered the hidden passage. Alexandria took a torch from the wall,
and descended down the dark staircase. The air was damp and cold. She shook with fear and nervousness, yet she
bravely pressed on. Alexandria was freezing; the tunic provided no warmth at all. Seeing her friend in distress
brought Kat out of her black despair.
“Follow me.” She said. “I know where we can get clothes and weapons.”
When they reached the next landing Kat turned to the right. Following a narrow corridor, she stopped and pushed
open a wooden door. It was the guards supply room. They dressed in warm clothes and belted sharp swords around
their waists. Kat tried on a helmet but it was too big and she couldn’t see out of it. The armor was to heavy for
the girls to wear.
The guards had finally broken down the door to Claude’s room. His body was discovered and an alarm was raised.
The Captain did not put up a fight…he stood calmly as the guards raised their swords and cut him down. The girls
heard men shouting and the pounding of running feet. But darkness had fallen and they were able to escape the palace
without being discovered. They swiftly ran along the back alleys of the town. Kat led them to a tavern frequented
by travelers. There was a small stable in the back, and with an apple, Kat persuaded two of the best horses there
to accompany them. Alexandria picked out two comfortable saddles. Now mounted, they galloped towards the robber’s
woods. They rode until Kat feared the horses would give out. Then they stopped to rest.
