The flight into Houston was a bit bumpy however Nicole scarcely noticed. She read through her itinerary for the fifth time. Anxiously she looked for her hotel confirmation and room assignment. This nurse’s conference was a big event. The hotel had been booked solid for months. Normally Nicole would share a room with one of her co-workers but this year she traveled alone. Budget cutbacks at the hospital only allowed for one nurse to attend the conference.

Her husband Michael had not been thrilled with the news. Nicole played with her wedding ring; twisting it round and round. Finally she took it off and put it in her coin purse. That simple act seemed to set her free. Nicole Larson was 32 years old, tall, blonde and athletic. She had shimmering blue eyes that entranced people. Nicole and Michael had been married for three years, and lately Michael had been pressuring Nicole to get pregnant. It wasn’t just Michael either. Her mother-in-law loved to give not so subtle hints. Like when are you going to make me a grandmother? Or you aren’t getting any younger; it’s better to have children now. Nicole didn’t get along with Michael’s mother and resented her intrusion into their marriage. Her own parents had died when she was in her twenties and Nicole missed them very much. She took a deep breath and forced herself to think of something else.

After collecting her luggage, Nicole flagged down a cab and headed downtown to the medical center. Her hotel was located right next to the medical complex. She would be able to walk to all her scheduled events. The hotel room was nice with all the usual amenities. Nicole pulled back the bedspread and lay down for a few minutes. She needed some relaxation time just for herself.

Dani Woods was another nurse attending the conference. She was an attractive brunette with soft brown eyes. Dani glanced at her watch. There was enough time to check in and get something to eat before the evenings meet and greet event. Dani went to her hotel room and ordered room service. Although she knew several women at the conference from previous years, Dani didn’t feel like connecting with them just yet. Most of the ladies liked to talk about their relationship problems and Dani was not interested in their bitch sessions. Not too many of her co workers knew she was gay. It wasn’t something she liked to advertise. Oh people like to pretend they are open-minded in the medical field but the typical shit goes on. Straight doctors and nurses are not above making jokes about gay patients. Dani had heard all the comments and she refused to make her private life an issue of gossip at work

The evening’s cocktail party was a way for the nurse’s to meet new and old friends. There were a few male nurses present but women dominated the crowd. Dani was talking to a small group of ladies when she noticed a tall blonde with the most incredible blue eyes walk by. Her heart took a little skip. Dani stopped in mid sentence and couldn’t remember what she had been talking about. Her friends teased her unmercifully for her sudden memory loss. Dani shook her head and concentrated on the flow of conversation. It was really all too boring and Dani couldn’t keep that mysterious blonde off of her mind. She was puzzled by her reaction. She was too old and had had too many bad relationships to fall for someone at first sight.

The next morning Dani sat in the hotel’s café sipping a cup of coffee. She needed lots of caffeine to function. The first presentation of the conference was due to start in 30 minutes. Dani opened her folder; she needed her name tag and admission papers. A soft voice interrupted her.

“Excuse me … is this chair taken?”

Dani looked up in shock as the mysterious blonde woman stood before her. She stuttered. “Yeah … I mean no … you are welcome to it.” Dani was furious at herself for being so inept.

The woman had a wide friendly smile. “Thank you. I don’t know anyone at this conference and I just hate to eat alone.”

“Oh I know how that is. By the way my name is Dani Woods.”

The woman shook her hand. “I’m Nicole Larson.”

The women drifted into a conversation about their work and soon were chatting like they had been friends for years. They were so engrossed in their conversation that they missed the first presentation. They did mange to make the second one and made plans to meet for dinner.

Nicole went back to her room. She was strangely excited and she didn’t know why. Only once in college had she had a brief sexual encounter with a female roommate. Nicole thought back to the time she had spent with Sharon. The passionate memories made her blush. She thought she would get over those feelings once she married Michael but lately Nicole had doubts about her sexuality. Maybe she was bi. Nicole was nervous. She wondered what she was getting herself into. Because she instinctively knew Dani was a lesbian and that there was a mutual attraction.

Meanwhile in her room Dani paced the floor. She felt ridiculous; like a kid with a crush. She was here to attend the conference not act like some lovesick fool. But sometimes love comes in mysterious ways. There is no explaining it; like a lightening bolt you are struck by its power.

Both women were nervous at dinner. They chatted about the conference and avoided all reference to their personal lives at home. Nicole wasn’t all that hungry, she just picked at her food. Dani sipped her wine and ate her grilled shrimp.

Nicole licked her lips. “So, do you live here Dani?”

“Yeah, I’m a native Texan. I was born in Austin, but now I live in Clear Lake.”

“I just moved to Arizona. Before that I lived in Oregon.” Nicole purposely avoided all mention of her husband.

“That’s a big change in climate.” Dani commented.

“I know, we used to live by the coast and I sure miss seeing the ocean everyday.”

“We?”

Nicole panicked; if she told Dani the truth about her being married she would walk away. And that’s something Nicole refused to let happen, so she lied. “Oh … I’m divorced.”

“How long were you married?”

“Three years.”

“Any kids?”

Nicole grew more and more uncomfortable. She didn’t like lying to Dani, but what could she do now? “No … that’s one of the things that broke us up. I know it sounds horrible but I just don’t want children.”

Dani leaned over and held her hand. “Hey, don’t worry I never wanted kids either. I’d have to totally change my life if I had a child and I’m not willing to do that.”

Tears sprang to Nicole’s eyes. “People always act like you’re some kind of a monster when you say you don’t want children.”

“You can’t live your life by what other people think.”

Nicole laughed bitterly. “You never met my mother-in-law.”

Dani abruptly changed the subject. “The conference ends tomorrow. Do you think you could stay a few extra days? I’d like to take you down to Galveston and show you around. I know you’d love it.”

There it was. The invitation was out in the open. Nicole was infatuated with Dani, she really wanted to spend more time with her, but Michael would never let her stay. Even if she dared ask him, it would blow up into a huge fight. No, it was better not to even mention the subject to him.

“Oh, you are so sweet.” Nicole looked down at the ground. She couldn’t look into Dani’s eyes. “But I can’t. I have to get back to work.”

Dani was very disappointed but she tried not to show it. “The invitation is good anytime you want to take me up on it.”

They were still holding hands. Nicole couldn’t stop the stream of tears falling from her eyes. She sobbed. “You don’t know how much I wish I could stay.”

Dani leaned over and gave her a quick hug. “Hey, I didn’t mean to get you upset.”

A number of people in the restaurant were openly staring at the women. Nicole was embarrassed and pulled away from Dani. “Can we go somewhere else to talk?” She pleaded.

They went over to the hotel’s cocktail lounge. Several nurses from the conference were there and they smiled and waved. But Dani had no intention of sharing a table with them. She headed for a booth in the back, where she and Nicole could have a more private chat. A woman played the piano in the lounge, but the music was soothing not distracting to their conversation.

Dani reached out and squeezed Nicole’s hand. “I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable. But I think you know I’m very attracted to you.”

A waitress interrupted them. Dani ordered a bottle of Merlot. Nicole was even more nervous. Should she just break down and tell Dani the truth? That she had only slept with one woman and that she was married. No that would ruin things. Right now all she wanted was to be near Dani, the women held hands as they talked. There was a definite sexual charge in the air.

Dani noticed the two businessmen first. The men headed straight for their table; confident in their ability to pick up women.

The one in the blue suit spoke first. “Hey there little lady. Do you want to dance?”

Nicole shook her head. “No thank you.”

“Oh come on.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her from the booth.

His friend with the black cowboy hat slid into the booth next to Dani. “Hi cutie. Why don’t you let me buy you a drink?” He put his arm around her shoulders.

Dani pushed him away. “We’re not interested.”

But the men were very persistent. The blue suit dragged Nicole out onto the small dance floor. He had his arms wrapped tightly around her so she couldn’t escape. She could smell a mixture of alcohol and cologne on him. His friend tried to kiss Dani so she threw her glass of wine into his face.

He roared. “You fucking bitch!”

Dani wasn’t taking any chances. She grabbed the wine bottle. The man was drunk but he wasn’t in the mood for an all out fight. He took a napkin and wiped his face. He sneered at Dani. “You ‘re probably just a couple of dykes anyway!”

A bouncer separated Nicole and her partner. He strongly suggested that the men leave the bar. Nicole thanked the bouncer and went back to Dani. Both women were upset by the incident. They decided to leave the bar a few minutes later. Dani looked around before they took the elevator upstairs. She wanted to make sure the men weren’t following them. But they had learned their lesson and were nowhere to be seen.

As the elevator doors closed, Dani stared at Nicole with longing in her eyes. She hugged Nicole and gave her a deep open mouthed kiss. Their tongues danced together in a moment of intense passion. Nicole whimpered with delight. This was even better than she had imagined. It was different than kissing a man, more gentle and definitely more exciting. Dani massaged Nicole’s breasts while her tongue explored Nicole’s soft warm mouth. They giggled with anticipation. Nicole was shocked at herself. French kissing a woman in an elevator. What was next?

They went to Dani’s room it was closer. The women fell onto the bed and stripped each other’s clothes off. Nicole’s heart was pounding wildly. She couldn’t take her eyes off of Dani’s beautiful nude body. Dani whispered softly. “I want you so much.”

Nicole wanted Dani too. But the sight of Dani with her warm trusting eyes, made Nicole pull away. “I’m sorry I just can’t do this.” Nicole sat up in the bed and put her shirt back on.

“What’s wrong?”

“I lied to you.” Nicole pushed her bangs out of her eyes. “I’m not divorced, I’m married.”

“Oh shit!” Dani was stunned.

“Yeah … at first I thought why not have a fling? But I can’t lie to you anymore.”

“Have you ever been with a woman?” Dani asked.

“Once in college. Any way it doesn’t matter now.” Nicole finished getting dressed. “I’m sorry I hurt you, but this got too serious too fast.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t need to say anything. I’m the one who screwed things up.” Nicole stood by the door. “I really am sorry.” And then she was gone.

The next morning Dani skipped breakfast. She wasn’t hungry at all. As a matter of fact she was still in shock. One minute she was about to make love with a beautiful woman and the next it had all crumbled. How could Nicole do this to her?

Nicole hadn’t slept a wink. She re-evaluated her life and it just wasn’t what she wanted. When she had met Dani it was like a light turning on. She felt loved and appreciated. Dani didn’t pressure or humiliate her the way Michael and his mother did. Nicole picked up the phone and called her husband.

He was grumpy as usual. “When are you coming home?”

Nicole took a deep breath. “I am going to stay a couple of extra days. I want to go down to Galveston and see the beach.”

“Are you crazy?” Michael shouted into the phone. “I’m telling you right now … get your ass home!”

“No!”

“No? You said no to me?” Michael couldn’t believe what he just heard. “Nicole, I’m warning you, stop this shit right now.”

“Michael you don’t own me. I have a right to be happy.”

“Oh God … you’re fucking another guy!”

“No, I’m not! But I need some time away from you.”

“You don’t know what you are saying!”

Nicole laughed bitterly. “Yes, I do!”

She slammed the phone down and then immediately called Dani. But there was no answer. Nicole ran down to the front lobby and asked if Dani had checked out. The clerk was very helpful. “Ms. Woods checked out this morning. But we’re holding her luggage while she attends her last conference meeting. She’ll pick up her bags around 1pm.”

Nicole glanced at her watch. It was only 11am. She had hours to wait. Well wait she would, because Nicole didn’t want to take a chance of missing Dani. After she gave the clerk a generous tip, she bought a few magazines and started to read. But she couldn’t concentrate, so she just flipped through the pages and looked at the pictures. About an hour later Nicole saw the clerk waving her arms. She looked up at the counter. Dani was collecting her luggage. She walked up and stood behind her.

“Umm … do you need any help with your luggage?” Nicole asked.

Dani spun around. “What do you want?”

“Please … I need to talk to you.”

“Go home to your husband Nicole.”

“No! I can’t do that!”

Dani looked over at the clerk, who was staring at them with blatant curiosity. “You had your fun playing your games, now just leave me alone!”

“I wasn’t playing a game. I was afraid to tell you the truth; but that doesn’t mean my feelings weren’t real.”

Dani could see she was serious. “Oh hell! Lets eat lunch, I’m starving.”

The clerk agreed to continue holding on to Dani’s luggage and the women went into the restaurant. It seemed a safe enough place to talk. Nicole stared at her menu, desperately trying to think of something to say. She felt like she was having a panic attack, she froze and couldn’t utter a word.

Dani noticed how uncomfortable Nicole was. She took a sip of her diet Coke and leaned back in her chair. “This is stupid. Lets just forget we were ever attracted to each other.”

“I can’t forget! I lied to you and I feel awful about it.”

“You certainly aren’t the first woman who has lied to me. I’ll get over it.”

Nicole shook her head vigorously. “You don’t understand! I truly want us to be friends. I don’t want to leave here and never see you again.”

“This may sound rude but I’m not interested in women who think they might be lesbians.”

“So you’re saying its hopeless then?”

Dani said as gently as she could. “Go back home Nicole. That’s where you belong.”

Nicole couldn’t stop the tears that streamed down her cheeks. “I was a fool to think you could ever forgive me.” She stood up and threw her napkin on the table. “I’m not some nut or some desperate woman. But I guess that’s exactly what you think of me. I just wanted to be your friend, that’s all.”

Dani watched Nicole run out of the restaurant. She felt awful but at least it was over now. Dani collected her luggage and got into her cherry red mustang. The drive back home was uneventful. Dani lived in Clear Lake, which is on the southern edge of Houston. She preferred to stay in hotels during the conferences because the downtown traffic was so terrible. Dani’s dog Wolf greeted her when she got home. Wolf was a German Shepherd and Husky mix. Dani was lucky because her next-door neighbor loved Wolf and always took care of him when Dani was away.

She played with Wolf and then gave him a rawhide bone to chew on. Dani took a shower and planned on going to bed early. The hot water sprayed down on her body, relaxing her tight muscles. She couldn’t keep her mind off of Nicole. Damn it! There was no reason to call her. It was over, it was done with, just let it alone! But Dani couldn’t shake the feeling that she was missing out on something.

It wouldn’t hurt to call her. Maybe things wouldn’t work out between them, but so what? Dani stayed in the shower until her skin wrinkled up like a prune. She paced around her house, took Wolf for a long walk and then stared at her phone. Dani summoned up all her courage and forced herself to dial Nicole’s hotel room.

Nicole answered after the third ring. “Hello.”

“It’s me … Dani.”

“Oh ..”

“I’m sorry. I should have listened to you, instead of judging you.” Dani’s heart was pounding and her mouth was dry. “Aren’t you going to say anything?”

“I’m just surprised! I never expected to hear from you again.”

“It’s taken me awhile to work up the nerve to call you.”

Nicole cried out. “OH Dani … I’m so sorry I lied to you!”

“I can’t stop thinking about you. Call it fate, destiny or what ever but I think we should at least try to be friends.”

“I’d like that very much.” Nicole replied softly.

“So where do we go from here?”

“What about that trip to the beach?”

“You mean you can stay for a few days?”

“Uh huh.”

“Okay, then I’ll pick you up in the morning.”

“Thanks Dani.”

“Bye.”

Dani looked at her watch. It wasn’t too late to call her neighbor. Virginia Goldman and her husband Jerry had been friends of Dani’s for years. They were very protective of her and treated her like one of their family. When Dani called Virginia and told her about Nicole, her neighbor instantly became concerned.

“Dani, you don’t know anything about this woman.”

“I know. I know. It sounds crazy.”

“You could wind up getting really hurt. What if she goes back to her husband?”

“I’m not sure about anything.”

“Well, I certainly want to meet her.”

Dani laughed. “Okay Mom, I’ll bring Nicole over tomorrow. I just need you to watch Wolf for one more night.”

“Are you sleeping with her?”

“Ginny, I love you but that’s none of your business.”

“Mmm … well be careful. Okay?”

“Sure.” Dani hung up the phone and scratched Wolf’s ears. He loved that. He put his massive paws on Dani’s knees and attempted to climb into her lap. Dani laughed at him. “You’re too big for that now Wolf.” Disappointed the dog lay down at her feet. Dani reached down and petted her dog. She wondered why dogs love people. Didn’t matter if they were rich or poor, fat or thin, pretty or ordinary. Dogs just loved with no conditions. Too bad people weren’t like that.

The next morning Nicole awaited Dani’s arrival. Michael called again, but Nicole firmly told him he was wasting his time. Nicole felt free to do what she wanted, to achieve all that she dreamed. These feelings overwhelmed her. Nicole was being reborn and seeing the world in a whole new light.

Dani’s heart was beating rapidly as she stood at the door. She took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself and then knocked softly. Nicole opened the door and both women stared at each other for a few moments. Dani thought Nicole looked gorgeous. She was wearing white linen Capri pants, sandals and a tropical shirt. Dani looked down at her cut off jean shorts and Cowboys T- shirt. Well she never liked getting dressed up much.

“Do you want to come in?” Nicole asked graciously.

“Umm … do you mind if we just get going?”

“No of course not. Let me get my things.”

Dani grabbed the heaviest bag and insisted on carrying it to the car. Nicole went to the desk and checked out. Dani picked her up at the front door. While Dani was driving, the women didn’t talk much, they kept sneaking glances at each other and then looking away. The silence was a bit intimidating to Dani. She didn’t know what to say.

Finally Nicole spoke. “I’m glad you called me.”

Dani cleared her throat. “It’s none of my business but did you really leave your husband?”

“Yes, I have been thinking about this for a long time. I just don’t love him anymore.”

Dani said thoughtfully. “I can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen when you don’t like me anymore?”

Nicole burst out into tears. “Damn it! You just don’t understand! Michael has been very abusive to me. Oh not physically … but emotionally. He is always putting me down and making me feel like I should be so grateful to him for even marrying me.”

Dani spotted a rest stop and pulled over. She hugged Nicole and gently stroked her hair.
“I’m sorry. Please don’t cry.”

Nicole sobbed. “I’m not giving you a good impression of me. I’m a nice person! Not some sex starved woman looking for a cheap thrill!”

“I’m not very cheap.” Dani whispered into Nicole’s ear.

Both women started laughing. The tension was broken. The rest of the drive was pleasant, the women chatted eager to know more about each other. It wasn’t long before Dani pulled into her driveway. Virginia Goldman was standing in the front yard with Wolf. Nicole was a bit nervous as the huge dog ran up to the car. Dani jumped out and played with her dog.

Dani laughed. “Let me introduce you to my baby. This is Wolf.”

Hesitantly Nicole extended her hand to pet the dog. Wolf licked her hand. “Oh, I think he likes me.”

Virginia interrupted them. “Since Dani has neglected to introduce us, I’m Virginia Goldman.”

“Ginny, I was just getting around to that!” Protested Dani.

Nicole took a good look at the tall stern woman. She had dark black hair and her green eyes didn’t appear too friendly at the moment. Virginia grasped Nicole’s hand firmly. “I have been friends with Dani for years. Its only natural that I would want to meet any new women in her life.”

Dani stopped playing with Wolf. She caught the hostile tone in Virginia’s voice and she didn’t like it. “Hey, lets all loosen up … okay?”

Virginia’s smile had no warmth to it. “I just don’t see the attraction that’s all.”

Nicole’s face turned red. She stammered. “Are you jealous of me or something?”

“Back off Ginny, I mean it!” Dani was angry now. “You have no right to be rude to my friends.”

“Well, if that’s the way you feel then you can take care of your own dog from now on.” Virginia dramatically stomped across the yard into her own house.

Nicole was shocked. She couldn’t understand why this complete stranger seemed to hate her so much. Dani shook her head and led Nicole into her house.
“I’m sorry about that. Ginny thinks she can control me and that’s never going to happen.”

“Are you two lovers?”

“No.” Dani said firmly. “She’s just a friend that’s all.”

“But she seemed so jealous. Like she was afraid of losing you.”

“I know it wasn’t a pleasant way to start our weekend, but can we just forget this? I’ll talk to Ginny later. One thing I can guarantee she is going to apologize for her bad behavior.”

“Oh … it doesn’t matter. Why don’t you show me your house?”

Dani gave her a tour. Her house had three bedrooms, an office, a huge living room with a stone fireplace, two bathrooms and a nice kitchen. The back yard was very large, with a tall cedar fence. Wolf ran outside and barked at the birds. The women walked out into the lush green grass. There were two large oak trees, several rose bushes and a small vegetable garden. Nicole loved the house and yard. Dani leaned over and picked a beautiful pink rose and gave it to Nicole.

She blushed and said. “Thank you.”

“It’s just my way of saying I like you a lot.”

Nicole kissed Dani softly on the cheek. “I have never done anything like this before.”

Dani wrapped her arms around Nicole’s waist. She stared intently into her friend’s eyes. “I want you to enjoy yourself. Relax and forget about being nervous.”

“Yeah, sure! Why should I be nervous about a beautiful woman holding me in her arms and making my heart race out of control?”

“You’re good for my ego!” Dani laughed.

“I used to dream about meeting someone like you. And now that it has happened, I’m scared to death.”

Dani reached up and wiped away her tears. “Don’t be afraid of me.”

“Oh its not that!” Nicole shouted, frustrated that she couldn’t express her feelings any better. I just don’t know if I’m doing the right thing.”

“Mmm … well why don’t you sit down while I fix us some lunch.”

Nicole insisted on helping Dani. She set their dishes on the picnic table. It was too nice a day to eat inside. They had roast beef sandwiches, with lettuce and mayo on homemade wheat bread. Nicole gave part of her sandwich to Wolf. Dani laughed and said. “Well, you just made a friend for life.”

“I hope we all can be friends. But I have to admit I’m still bothered by the way Virginia acted.”

Dani shrugged. “She’s just protective of me. I can’t really explain it.”

“But I didn’t do anything to her.”

“No matter who I bring home, she acts the same.”

“I guess I’m not used to being insulted by complete strangers.”

“Look, I’m not saying she’s perfect.” Dani struggled to explain her feelings to Nicole. “But Virginia and her husband have been good to me and I like them a lot. It’s just hard for her to see me with other women.”

“Tell me the truth. Did you ever have sex with her?”

Dani muttered softly. “Yes. Her husband was out of town, we were skinny dipping in her pool, drinking some wine and well … it just happened.”

“She’s in love with you.”

“Yeah. I guess so.”

“Oh come on Dani! You asked me to be honest, so I expect you to do the same!”

“Well, it’s not the same as having a husband around!”

“I told you the truth about him.”

“Yeah finally!”

“Coming here was a big mistake.” Nicole cried out. “I’m going to call a cab.”

Dani jumped up and grabbed Nicole’s hand. “Wait! Please just wait a minute!” She stared intently into Nicole’s eyes. “I don’t want you to leave.”

“How are we going to deal with all these problems?”

“You worry too much. Can’t you just accept things as they are?” Dani tried using all her powers of persuasion. “No relationship is problem free.”

“Are we going to have a relationship?”

Dani kissed Nicole softly on the lips. “Yes. I want you.”

The wind blew softly. The leaves rustled and a few floated down to the ground in a gentle spiral. The sun was warm and comforting. Nicole felt at peace finally. She knew she belonged here with Dani. Oh there was no logical reason it would ever work out between them, but love just isn’t logical. It’s magical!

They took things slowly. Dani wanted to romance Nicole, to gain her confidence, and to savor their time together. The next few days flew by. Dani drove Nicole down to Galveston. They shopped on the Strand, took long walks on the beach and watched the pelicans diving for fish. They tried different restaurants and at night they went to THE SAND DOLLAR, which was a lesbian nightclub. Nicole loved to dance, she laughed as Dani good-naturedly tried to keep up with her. After a few songs Dani gave up and went to the bar to get a couple of beers. Nicole found an empty table.

Nicole fanned herself. “Oh I am having so much fun!”

“So … what would you say if I asked you to move in with me?”

“What?” Nicole stared deeply into her friend’s eyes. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah, I am.” Dani took a deep gulp of her beer. “I mean do you really want to go back to your husband?”

“No! But us living together is a big step.”

“I love you Nicole. I want to make love to you. Just thinking about it is driving me crazy!”

“Then … lets go home.”

They didn’t say much in the car. Dani had to drive carefully through the heavy traffic. She felt as nervous as a schoolgirl on her first date. Nicole kept looking at Dani, she couldn’t imagine making love to anyone else. Oh she had been attracted to women before but she had never had the nerve to do anything about it.

At the house Dani led Nicole by the hand into her bedroom. Both women were breathing heavily. Anticipation was in the air. Nicole was trembling as she lay back on the bed. Dani leaned over and kissed her gently on the mouth.

“Mmm … I can’t wait to taste you.”

“Oh Dani …” Nicole moaned.

Their kisses became more forceful. Dani stripped Nicole’s clothes off. Then she buried her face into Nicole’s soft, warm breasts. Her mouth encircled one of Nicole’s nipples and she sucked vigorously. Her tongue teased the nipple erect.

Nicole cried out. It felt so good. Nicole arched her back and felt herself getting wet with desire. Frantically Dani pulled her own clothes off, she pressed her breasts against Nicole’s.

“Umm … I love you Nicole!” She panted. Their bodies writhed with passion. Nicole rubbed her wet pussy against Dani’s thigh. Dani’s hand slipped down between her legs and she gently slipped her fingers into Nicole’ s velvet soft vagina.

“Oh GOD! OH …OH … Dani!” She screamed out loud.

Dani pushed Nicole’s legs further apart and buried her face into her hot pussy. Her tongue licked and caressed Nicole’s throbbing clit. Nicole came immediately. Her body shook violently as her orgasm overtook her. Dani pushed her tongue deeply into Nicole’s vagina, swirling it around and around, drinking in her juices. Nicole was out of control, begging for more. Dani teased Nicole’s clit with her tongue and ever so gently pressed her teeth against her lover’s clit. Nicole exploded. Her warm, damp body shuddered as once more she had a glorious orgasm. She fell back against the soft pillows, exhausted. Dani laughed and kissed her full on the mouth.

“You were incredible.”

“Oh Dani, I love you so much.”

Nicole pushed Dani back into the pillows. It was her turn to make Dani scream with pleasure. Dani felt Nicole’s warm breath on her thighs, then Nicole’s mouth was on her pussy. Playing with her, teasing her, lapping up her juices. Dani yelled with pure joy. Her orgasm was overwhelming.

“Just when I had convinced my self that I could live without a girlfriend, you come along and show me how fantastic making love can be.”

“Dani … I’m scared. This is just too good to be true.”

“Don’t be scared. Believe it, welcome it and enjoy it. Love is the most glorious feeling of them all.”

“That sounds just like poetry.”

Dani laughed out loud. “Actually it was kind of lame. But what I mean is love has a mind of its own, I don’t think you can control it.”

“So where do we go from here?”

“Anywhere you want to go.” Dani whispered softly. “What I want is for you to stay with me, love me and be my woman forever.”

“Everyone I know is going to be upset when I tell them I’m living with you.”

“What matters the most to you? Your happiness or their opinion?”

“But if it doesn’t work out you haven’t lost anything. I will have lost my friends and all my support.”

“If your friends turn away because you are a lesbian then they weren’t really friends to begin with.”

“I don’t know Dani. It’s such a big step.”

Nicole took some personal leave time from her job. Her mother-in-law left several nasty messages on her cell phone. Michael never called but that was okay because she had Dani to keep her warm at night. She enjoyed exploring her sexuality with Dani. Nicole blushed when she thought about how many times they had made love. They were turned on all the time; it was simply amazing. But at night her doubts returned and several times she woke up because of bad dreams.

Dani went back to work and during the day Nicole filled her time by writing and working in the garden. She had a nice savings account and wasn’t pressed for money. Nicole was confused, she wanted to stay with Dani but she also feared the uncertainty of their feelings for each other. Was falling in love with Dani just a reaction to the fact that she was so unhappy with Michael? Dani was pressing Nicole to make a commitment and move in permanently. It was the only subject they ever argued about.

Monday morning Nicole woke up feeling sick to her stomach. Waves of nausea rocked her body. Dani had already left for work. She groped her way to the bathroom and threw up. Nicole sat on the floor by the toilet and put a damp washcloth on her forehead. Suddenly an awful thought came to her. She hadn’t had her period since she moved in with Dani. Oh shit why now? Nicole cleaned up, got dressed and then called a taxi to take her to the nearest drug store. Quickly she bought two pregnancy tests and returned home. Nicole ran to the bathroom and took the first test. It wasn’t long before her worst fears came true. She was indeed pregnant. Nicole threw herself onto the bed and sobbed. Her dream was over. Reality came crashing in. She knew Michael would have to be told.

Nicole grabbed the phone and dialed his number. He wasn’t happy when he heard her voice. “What do you want?” He said gruffly.

“I just wanted you to know that I’m pregnant.”

Michael sounded unconcerned. “So who’s the father?”

“Don’t do this to me Michael! You know you are the father!”

“Hell … I don’t know anything anymore! I used to think you were a normal woman and then look what happened.”

“I don’t want to fight with you. All I want to know is do you want the baby?”

“If it’s mine, of course I want it!”

“Will you let me live in the house until I give birth? We can decide what to do after that.”

“What about your new girlfriend? I won’t have her in my house.”

“No … she isn’t involved in this.”

“What did she do? Dump you?” Michael asked sarcastically.

Nicole sobbed. “I’m leaving her.”

The conversation lasted for a few more minutes. Nicole glanced at the clock Dani would be home soon. She didn’t have much time to pack up and leave. Nicole knew Dani was going to be upset and she just couldn’t deal with that right now. She chose to take the easy way out and leave Dani a note. Nicole tried to explain that she just wasn’t ready to raise a child in a lesbian relationship. But the words wouldn’t come to her. In the end she said she wasn’t happy and was going back to Michael.

When Dani got out of work she headed for the gas station. There was no way she was getting on the highway with her fuel gauge next to empty. The bumper-to-bumper traffic in Houston just sucked the gas right out of her car. On the street corner a young man with a purple and green Mohawk was selling flowers. Dani strolled over and bought a dozen red roses. She went back to her car with a smile on her face, just picturing Nicole’s reaction to the flowers. Back on the road rush hour was in full swing. Dani dreamed of the time that she could buy some land out in the country. She wanted a weekend getaway. As Dani drove she turned her radio up full blast and just sang her heart out. She loved to sing; she also knew her voice wasn’t the best. But who cares about that when you’re alone in your car? Hell she had to do something to pass the time until her exit came up.

As soon as she opened her front door, Dani knew something was wrong. Wolf was jumping up on her begging for attention, but where was Nicole? The house felt too empty and silent.

She called out. “Nicole? Nicky where are you?” There was no answer. Dani looked out in the back yard and upstairs, then she headed for the kitchen. On the oak table lay a folded piece of paper. Frantically she read the note. It dropped from her hand and she sank into a chair and burst into tears. Dani cried out in pain. “Oh shit!”

The front door was open and Virginia wandered in. “Dani?”

“Yeah, I’m in the kitchen.” Hastily Dani wiped her eyes with a dishtowel. She didn’t want Virginia to know she had been crying.

Virginia didn’t look at Dani’s tear stained face. She went to the counter and started to make some coffee. Virginia stared at the clear glass pot, watching the coffee drip down. “You know I saw her leave.”

“What?”

“I watched Nicole load her bags into a cab and leave.”

Dani yelled out. “Well why the hell didn’t you try to stop her?”

“And just how was I supposed to do that?”

“You could have at least called me.”

“In case you don’t remember, you haven’t been talking to me lately.”

“Maybe if you hadn’t been so rude to Nicole she would have stayed.”

Virginia got angry. “Don’t blame this on me! I told you a married woman was nothing but trouble!”

Dani moaned loudly. “You’re married and we managed to stay friends. At least I hope we’re still friends.”

“You little nut!” Virginia affectionately hugged Dani. “Of course we’re friends. But don’t expect me to be less than honest with you.”

“Then tell me why couldn’t she wait until I got home from work? We could have talked things out.”

“Maybe she was scared. Or maybe Nicole just wanted to go back home and didn’t know how to tell you.”

Dani jumped up, her chair fell back striking the floor. “Dammit! I thought she loved me!” She paced around her kitchen. “I can’t believe she did this to me!”

Virginia grabbed Dani again and hugged her tightly. “I’m sorry. I hate to see you suffering.” Dani held on to Virginia and cried. Tears of rage, sorrow and pain flowed forth. “Getting your heart broken just plain sucks!”

Nicole was back home with Michael. Her mother-in-law moved into the house too but that was a small price to pay for a normal life. Michael had insisted on resuming their sex life, Nicole was the ever compliant wife. She kept hoping that soon she would be too big to attract attention from Michael. Nicole quit her job; she intended to be a stay at home mom. At night she dreamed of Dani. Often she woke up crying, she explained her tears to Michael as a hormonal imbalance. Safety, security, and not being an object of gossip, these things were important to Nicole. She didn’t love Michael, she hated her mother-in-law, but she couldn’t face living openly as a lesbian. She was afraid. Nicole knew she had hurt Dani deeply. She stared at the phone, wanting so much to pick it up and call Dani. But she couldn’t. Nicole touched the phone and it burned in her hand. Guilt, remorse, and fear flooded her body. She looked up; her mother-in-law was standing in the doorway staring at her.

“Calling your little girlfriend?” She asked sarcastically.

Nicole moaned. “No! That’s over with.”

“Well I’m glad to hear that. Michael is a good man, he works hard and he deserves a decent wife!”

“I know.”

“When I think about what people would say if they knew … well it just makes me shudder!”

Nicole stood up abruptly. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore!”

“Oh sure it’s okay for you to hurt Michael, but you don’t want to face the consequences of your actions.”

“Will you just leave me alone?” Nicole begged her mother-in-law.

“I’m going to be watching you. I don’t want my boy to be hurt again.”

Nicole sighed deeply. “I know. I know. You can’t wait to catch me doing something wrong. Run to Michael and tell him what a horrible woman he married. Only mommy knows best!”

“Why you little bitch! How dare you say that to me?”

Nicole fled to her bedroom and locked the door. She threw herself onto the bed and cried into her pillow. She was miserable and it was all her fault. She could have been happy with Dani. But it was too late for that now. Once again she stared at the phone. No matter how much she wanted to, Nicole just couldn’t pick it up.

Nicole was proud of her good looks and her femininity. She had thoroughly enjoyed Dani’s infatuation with her. But her heart and mind froze when she thought of actually living with a woman. She couldn’t do it; she couldn’t risk it. Passion and love were for other people. She chose to be safe and secure. Nicole was terrified of being different, and incredible loneliness was her fate.

A few months later Dani was in her front yard raking leaves. Wolf was rolling in the pile of leaves scattering them all over. Dani yelled. “Hey, will you quit that?” Wolf ignored her and she couldn’t help but laugh at his antics. Virginia came over wrapped her arms around Dani and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

“Are you interested in having dinner with me?”

Dani shrugged her shoulders. “You don’t have to keep babysitting me. I’m doing fine.”

“I know you are okay. But I’m lonely, Jerry is out of town again.”

“Mmm … just what did you have in mind?”

Virginia unbuttoned Dani’s coat. She slid her hand up under Dani’s shirt. Her warm fingers caressed Dani’s soft breast. Dani gasped for breath. “You had better stop that, just think of what the neighbors will say.”

“They can’t see anything. Your coat is blocking their view.”

“Maybe, but I’d feel a lot more comfortable doing this inside.”

“Chicken!”

“Uh huh.”

Virginia laughed softly. “Well my dear lets go get naked.”

Dani walked into Virginia’s house and looked around. Everything was spotless as usual. She was dirty from working in the yard and her work boots had mud on them. And then there was Wolf who was a complete mess. “Virginia, I need to clean up. And Wolf will destroy your house.”

“Oh put Wolf in the back yard. He can’t hurt anything out there. I’m going to draw up a nice bubble bath for you.”

The women sat in the huge roman tub; the hot water and bubbles caressed their bodies. Virginia took a soft washcloth and gently washed Dani.

“Mmm … that feels so nice.” Dani covered Virginia’s hand with her own. She guided it down to her pussy. “Yeah … right there … rub me harder.” She gasped with anticipation.

Virginia eagerly complied. She tossed the washcloth aside and slid her fingers inside Dani. She loved watching Dani’s face as she stroked harder and harder, faster and faster.
“Oh… Oh … Oh God!” Dani moaned loudly.

Virginia kissed Dani firmly, their tongues met and danced with passion. Dani arched her back and spread her legs open wide. Virginia took her thumb and pressed down on Dani’s clit. Dani came instantly, screaming so loud it echoed around the bathroom.

They stood up and dried each other off. Virginia took Dani by the hand and led her to the bed. The women lay down and Virginia pushed Dani’s legs apart. Her tongue lovingly, slowly, licked Dani’s pussy. This moment was all that mattered. Dani could feel Virginia’s warm tongue stroking her, drinking in her juices. Dani watched Virginia’s head bob up and down between her thighs. She sighed in contentment. Okay they didn’t love each other enough to make this a permanent thing but sex with a close friend sure was nice. One day she would find her true love but until then she had her lovely neighbor to comfort her. And for today that was good enough.
