Sydney Smith fumbled with the two bags of groceries and barely managed to pull out her cell phone without dropping it. It was another text message from Pam. She pocketed the phone and made her way inside the apartment, setting the bags down and stopping the escaped jar of olives from rolling off of the counter just in time. Another late night at work and Pam was already blowing up her phone with texts about tomorrow night’s New Year’s Eve party - a gathering which she had been graciously attempting to avoid.

Cold stuff safely stored away, she retrieved the phone and threw her coat over the back of the sofa. The usual messages – please come – you’ll have fun – don’t stay home alone like last year. “Thanks for reminding me of that,” she muttered to herself. She knew Pam meant well, but she was in no mood to be miserable and alone in a crowd on the biggest ‘couples’ night, besides Valentines, of the year. She could picture the moment of shame now – everyone coupled off and kissing at midnight – her standing alone in the corner looking awkward. As if the three hours of making small talk before that wasn’t torture enough. She rang Pam’s phone.

“Please come tomorrow,” Pam answered.

“How many times do I have to say no, Pam?”

“Until I get you to say yes.”

Sydney huffed audibly. “Look, I really don’t …”

“I know what you’re going to say,” Pam interrupted. “But Syd, you’re wrong. There will be plenty of unattached women. It won’t be all couples, and it will be very casual. No pressure to dress up and there are plenty of people you know who are also coming.”

“The people I know who will be there are all coupled up. Then there’s the high probability that you’ve invited someone you want to set me up with. I’m not looking, Pam, and I’m tired of the whole dating thing.”

“You’re too young to give up, Syd. I know you’ve had a couple of bad breakups in the last few years, but you can’t just quit trying. The party starts at nine. Get here as late as you want to – not as much pressure to make small talk. Have a couple of drinks and if you find yourself that miserable, then go home early – no hurt feelings.”

“So basically if I don’t agree right now to come for at least an hour or so, you’ll harass me until tomorrow evening,” Sydney stated flatly.

“That’s correct.”

“Okay.”

“Seriously – you gave in that quickly?” Pam said incredulously.

“Quickly my ass. You’ve been after me for a week already.”

“Well, it worked,” Pam said. “I’m hanging up now before you change your mind.” And at that she disconnected before Sydney could respond.

As Sydney put away the remaining groceries she resigned herself to attending Pam’s party. Besides, she reasoned, it would be good to get out. She was spending way too much time at work and in her own apartment. One weekend to unwind, especially with a new job interview at the end of next week, might do her some good.

~~~~
Sydney gave herself a quick once over in the full length mirror. She turned. Yes, her favorite jeans still made her ass look great. Her black boots were not too shiny and not too worn. The soft gray v-neck sweater showed just enough cleavage and the color contrasted with her dark hair perfectly. She wore her hair down tonight and it looked shampoo ad-worthy. It was a nice change considering she kept it pulled back at work most of the time. She put on her black leather jacket and walked out the door at 9:30 p.m. It was less than a ten minute walk to cover the two blocks to Pam’s apartment building. That would give her a couple of hours at the most in case she wanted to quietly sneak away before the embarrassment of the midnight festivities arrived.
The party was as she had expected. There was one redeeming element – the striking blonde who she had stolen glances at throughout the night, and who she thought might be doing the same to her. Other than that it had been two hours of chit-chat, some tasty hors d’oeuvres, and a couple of very weakly made drinks (her own choice). Sydney checked her watch – 11:40 p.m. She made her way back to Pam’s bedroom and retrieved her black leather jacket. As she slipped it on and turned, the blonde was standing in front of her.
She smiled at Sydney. “Excuse me, but I think that you might have my jacket.”
A bit startled, Sydney reached into the right pocket and pulled out a set of keys. Her face almost went red. “Well, that was supposed to prove this is my jacket, but these definitely aren’t my keys.”
The woman laughed as Sydney slipped the jacket off and handed it to her. “Sorry about that. Looks just like mine.” She looked back toward the bed and spotted her jacket. This time she checked for her keys before slipping it on.
“If you’re leaving, do you mind if I walk out with you? I’m only a couple of blocks from home anyway,” the woman asked.
“Me too,” Sydney responded. “That’s fine. What direction?”
“Two blocks west in the Regency Arms East,” the blonde answered.
“I’m in the Regency Arms West. No wonder you look familiar to me. Not from my building but I guess I’ve seen you passing in front of the building quite often.” Sydney knew there was something about the woman she’d recognized, but she couldn’t place her. She extended her hand. “I’m Sydney Smith.”
“Eve Anders,” the woman replied. “Nice to meet you.”
As she withdrew her hand from the shake, Sydney was aware of the warmth and the slight tingling she felt at the contact. She shook herself mentally, wondering if she was so hard up for some touch that a handshake with an attractive woman was getting her that worked up. Really pathetic. Calm yourself down.
As they passed Pam on their way out, Sydney glanced back to see her giving a thumbs up. To her surprise, Eve was also looking back at Pam. Now she wasn’t sure who was getting the thumbs up. Maybe they both were.
At the elevator they both tried to speak at the same time. “Sorry, go ahead,” Sydney insisted.
“I wondered if you had any idea what the thumbs up from Pam was all about,” Eve asked.
“That’s funny. That’s exactly what I was about to ask you.” Sydney laughed as they stepped onto the elevator.
“I think we’ve both been had. Pam insisted I come to the party and I told her under no circumstances was she to try and set me up with anyone,” Eve exclaimed.
“Same with me – in so many words anyway. I also told her I would be escaping before the perfunctory coupling and kissing.”
“My thoughts exactly,” Eve agreed. “She didn’t even introduce us and yet somehow she knew we’d end up leaving together.”
As they walked out into the cold night air they both erupted into laughter.
“I’m just glad to be out of that party and on my way home,” Sydney said, rolling her eyes.
Eve tugged at her jacket sleeve. “Can I ask you something and get an honest answer?”
Sydney stopped and turned to her. “Sure.”
“Would it have been so bad if Pam had tried to set us up?”
“No. Honestly there were several times during the night I tried to get up the nerve to go over and talk to you,” Sydney admitted.
“I know. I don’t think either one of us was very stealthy with our stolen glances. So why didn’t you come over … why didn’t I approach you? Are we both that gun shy?”
“I am. To be blunt, Eve, I haven’t been in a relationship that lasted more than six months in the last three years. I work too much and it always strains an otherwise good situation. But I’m working on that. I hope to be changing positions soon.”
They crossed the street, slowly walking in the direction of their respective buildings. “So what do you do that requires so many hours?” Eve asked.
“I’m a prosecutor with the DA’s office. Been there seven years. The work is worthwhile, but it is too much and I do want a life outside of work. I know that won’t happen unless I find something less demanding of my time. I’ve got an interview with a firm that handles mostly business law on Thursday morning. What about you? My guess is you probably have the same problem. I can’t imagine a woman as attractive as you is alone for no good reason.”
“Thank you,” Eve said. “You’re right. Same problem. I just finished a residency at County General. But I’m joining a family medicine group in a month. I’ll be specializing in Pediatrics. So I’m hoping my hours will stabilize, so to speak, within the next year.” She stopped and looked at the apartment building entrance. “We’re here – your building.”
“Eve, don’t take this the wrong way, but you seem …”
“Too old to be just finishing a residency?”
Sydney fumbled for a rephrasing. “Well, no, I mean …”
“I was an RN for six years, then I applied to medical school, so yes, I got a late start on my MD.” Eve laughed at her. “Don’t be embarrassed.” She looked at her watch. “You know, we still have five minutes before the New Year arrives. You could make it up to me for calling me old by inviting me up for some coffee.”
“I did not call you old. In fact I suspect we’re about the same age. But you are invited up for coffee,” Sydney conceded.
“You tried to steal my jacket.”
“That was an honest mistake.”
Inside her apartment, Sydney tossed her jacket over the back of the sofa and went straight for the coffeemaker. When she turned away from it, Eve was standing behind her. She had just glanced at her watch.
“Change your mind? Do you need to get home?” Sydney asked.
“No,” Eve answered. She smiled. “There’s about fifteen seconds to go before midnight and I just wanted to tell you that in about sixteen seconds I’ll be stepping closer to you and leaning in for a kiss. So, counselor, if you have any objections make them now.”
Sydney said nothing. She stepped toward Eve and put her arms around her waist and leaned in for the kiss. “Like this?”
“Yes, exactly - but not quite yet.” Eve moved Sydney’s hair away from her ear and whispered, “Ten.” She grazed her lips below Sydney’s earlobe and along her neck. “Nine.”
She felt Sydney’s hands move lower to the small of her back and pull her against her even tighter. “Eight,” Sydney said, moving her right hand into Eve’s short blonde hair and then running her fingers down her spine.
“Mmm, seven …” Eve groaned, this time barely grazing Sydney’s lips with her own, teasing her.
Sydney gasped, becoming almost breathless. “One … midnight.”
When their lips finally met in a kiss it was slow, soft, sensual – not rushed, frantic or sloppy. But electric, nonetheless. Breathtaking. Tempting sensations flooded their bodies. When they pulled away from the kiss, they were both speechless. They remained in the embrace for what seemed like minutes.
“You cheated on the countdown,” Eve said.
“No, I don’t think you were keeping real time. I just moved us up to where we should have been.”
“True,” Eve admitted. She pulled back and looked at Sydney. “Happy New Year, Sydney.”
“Happy New Year, Eve.” Sydney glanced back toward the kitchen counter. “I think the coffee is ready – still want a cup?”
“I’m afraid if I stay long enough to drink a cup of coffee, I’ll want way more than that. As much as I’d like to … well … I’d like to get to know you first.”
“Me too,” Sydney agreed, biting her lip. Damn if she didn’t want her to stay, but she knew Eve was right.
“Would you have New Year’s Day brunch with me at …”
“Yes … oh, sorry, I didn’t let you finish the sentence.”
“At Belmont’s. It’s walking distance. I’ll pick you up here at 10:45 am and we’ll walk there together. Is that okay?”
“Yes.”
“May I have your phone number?”
“Yes.” Sydney grabbed a piece of note paper off of the counter and quickly wrote down her cell number.
“Are you this monosyllabic in the courtroom as well?” Eve asked, grinning at Sydney.
Sydney pushed the piece of paper into Eve’s hand. “No, but then I’ve never been kissed like that right before a courtroom appearance.”
She saw Eve to the door and locked up. Suddenly very tired, Sydney turned off the coffeemaker, the living room lights, and headed to the bathroom. She picked up her toothbrush and looked in the mirror.
Shaking her head, she said to herself, “You’re in big trouble woman.”
~~~~

Sydney wanted very much to call Pam and make the accusation, but she also didn’t want to let her know that she had won. She set her cell phone back on the counter, deciding it might be too early to call Pam, as she had no idea how late the party may have gone. As she started to walk away it rang. It was Pam.

“Smart-ass,” Sydney answered.

“That’s a really charming New Year’s Day greeting for one of your best friends,” Pam retorted.

“Happy New Year. I hate you. What are you doing up so early?”

“The party pretty much fizzled out by 1:00 am. I’m finishing up the cleaning and then I’m going to eat left over party food for breakfast. So why do you hate me?”

“You set us both up? How did you do that?”

“Syd, I never even introduced you to Eve. Both of you were very clear about not wanting any part of that, believe me.”

“You had to know she lived in the next building over.”

“I found that out last week, after I had already invited her. I’ve only known her for about a month. But I think she’s great – charming, sweet, and quite the hotty. Did you two walk home together?”

“Pam, somehow you engineered the whole thing.”

“Syd, you’re giving me way too much credit. But you know what, if you two become friends, or more, then good. I think you’d have a lot in common. So are you going to answer my question?”

“Yes, we walked home together.”

“And?”

“We kissed.”

“Wow, I am good!”

“I knew it.”

“I did not set you up and that comment was making fun of you for thinking I could pull that off. So? Good kisser? Are you going to see each other again?”

“Yes, we’re having brunch today.”

“Okay, you met a hot woman, had a nice New Year’s Eve kiss, and now you have a date with her. Why exactly do you hate me?”

“Because … I … well, I’m …”

“Oh my god, Sydney, you’re already falling for her!”

There was silence from Sydney’s end while she tried to compose her thoughts and phrase her response to Pam in a way that would not sound too pathetic or overly enthusiastic.”

“Syd?”

“Pam you have to promise not to share this with anyone. If you do we will no longer be friends.”

“Damn, Syd, I’m not a gossip and I would never betray that kind of confidence. I know how you feel about getting into another relationship and I would never take it lightly.”

“Okay. Sorry. Okay, I admit it. I don’t know whether I’d call it ‘falling’, per se, but yes, I am very interested in her. She is charming, and easy to talk to, and yes we seem to have a lot in common. But the kiss … the kiss … well I’ve never felt like that before with a first kiss … not with anyone. It was too perfect. Pam, I’m afraid of feeling like this so soon.”

“Most people are afraid of never feeling like that at all.”

“I know. I’m crazy. Something good happens and it scares the shit out of me.”

“You’re not crazy. It’s understandable. But you know what Syd – if you can’t take a chance on someone like Eve, then you might as well give up.”

“That was blunt.”

“It’s true.”

“Maybe that’s why I’m so scared.”

“Probably so.”

“You’re supposed to lie to me about how it will all turn into happily ever after, not be so matter of fact and honest.”

“Ah, I guess I didn’t tell you my New Year’s resolution.”

Sydney laughed.

“Syd, just be yourself. Like that … the laughter. Be yourself and everything will work out the way it is supposed to. I’ve got to go. Good luck.”

“Bye Pam.”

~~~~
They stopped outside of the lobby door to Eve’s building. “Well, here we are back already,” Eve commented. “I hope you really did enjoy the food, Sydney. I haven’t had a New Year’s Day off for the last three years and I was looking forward to their brunch. I’m happy you agreed to go with me.”
“I honestly loved the food. But then again I would assume the amount I ate might attest to that fact,” Sydney answered. She smiled at Eve. “Then there’s the half dozen times you asked on the walk back and I answered yes. Thanks again for the lovely meal.”
Eve apologized. “Sorry, I’m a bit rusty on this whole dating thing too. I want to please and I don’t want you to tell me you like something that you really don’t. I’ll stop pushing.”
Sydney raised an eyebrow. “Are we dating?”
“I considered that our first date,” Eve admitted. “I was hoping you would too.”
“I considered it our second date.”
Eve grinned broadly. “Excellent. Would you come up to my place for a bit? I’ve seen your apartment, so I guess it’s fair for you to see mine now.”
“I will, but I can’t stay long. I need a few hours this evening to go over some cases before I get to work tomorrow.”
“I promise I won’t keep you long.”
As Sydney walked into Eve’s apartment she tried to take in everything as quickly and as inconspicuously as possible. She didn’t want to seem like she was inspecting the place, but she could always get some insight into someone’s personality by their living space. It was very neat, orderly, but not immaculate. So she wasn’t a slob, but also not too obsessive either. A check in the plus column, as was her decorating style.
But what struck Sydney almost immediately was the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the corner of the living room. “You had time to put up a tree?”
Eve was pleased that she took notice. “I made time to put up the tree. No matter how busy I get, I can’t do without it. A tree is the one thing about Christmas I will not give up. It’s coming down tomorrow though, so I’m glad you got a look at it before I start the deconstruction.”
Sydney stepped a bit closer to look at the decorations. Now she felt guilty for not making herself do the same. “Eve, it’s absolutely gorgeous. You have a good eye.”
“Thanks. Can I get you something to drink?”
“Just some water please,” Sydney answered, as she continued to look around.
Eve put two glasses of water on the coffee table and sat in the middle of the sofa. There was a plan behind her seating position. “Come sit down and we can talk.” She patted the seat to her right.
Sydney sat, took a drink of water and then turned to Eve. “I know we’ve only known one another for less than a day so just stop me if this is too much. I’d like to be very straightforward with you right now.”
Eve was a little taken aback. It was as if Sydney had read her mind. She drank some water and set the glass back down. “Go ahead and say whatever is on your mind.”
Sydney cleared her throat and looked Eve in the eyes. “I like you very much Eve. In fact, I’m not even sure like is a very good word for it. My attraction to you is very strong in every way. I’m attracted to you physically and mentally. You’re easy to talk to. Although I was initially nervous last night, that went away quickly. I’m completely comfortable around you. I’d like to continue seeing you. But I want you to know up front that I’m looking for something serious. I don’t like games. I’m interested in a mature relationship, and I value honesty and fidelity. I realize we’re both very busy professionals, but I am willing to do my best to make time for us. Well, that is if you are also interested in an ‘us’.” She took another sip of the water and waited for Eve to respond.
But when Eve started to speak Sydney held up her finger to stop her. “Sorry … one more thing. I wanted to say one more thing before you respond.”
Eve was on the verge of a huge grin, but she was trying to keep a neutral expression. She was also fighting an overwhelming impulse to pull Sydney to her and kiss her. “Go ahead.”
“Last night … the kiss … well … I have to tell you, it was the best first kiss ever. Wait, no qualifying with the ‘first’. It was the best kiss I have ever had.” She sat looking at Eve and waited for her to respond.
Eve reached her right arm around Sydney’s waist and began to pull her toward her. Sydney did what she had wanted to do since she saw Eve plant herself in the middle of the sofa. She swung her leg over and straddled Eve’s lap, facing her. She dug her fingers into the short blonde locks and kissed her deeply, insistently, and with much more urgency than the previous night. When she broke away momentarily, Eve let out a little moan of satisfaction. Sydney planted a series of light kisses on Eve, ending with a very sensual kiss on her bottom lip. Eve wanted to melt into her.
“It’s the same for me. Everything you said Sydney – it’s the same. I feel all of those things. I adore you. I want you so badly I can almost … well … I better not even keep talking about it. What you said about a mature relationship – honesty and fidelity – it’s as if you read my mind.”
“There’s a ‘but’ in there somewhere,” Sydney stated, searching Eve’s eyes for a clue.
“No there isn’t.”
“Then why do you keep shutting me down when things get too hot physically?”
“I was honest about that last night. I want to get to know you better before we … gee now I sound like a teenager … go all the way. What a thing to say. Consummate our relationship physically? However you want to put it. I’m not shutting you down, I’m shutting myself down. I’ve always jumped into that part of a relationship very quickly and it hasn’t worked out for me so far.”
“And I’ve always been overly cautious about that side of it,” Sydney retorted. “So the opposite hasn’t worked out for me. I guess that’s why after you made the first move the other night I felt like I could just go for it. Anyway, maybe how soon or how long we wait makes no difference. We both admitted our issues stem more from the work hours we put in.”
“For me,” Eve said. “That’s a big part of the same problem. My last girlfriend and I broke it off because when we did finally make a little time for each other that’s all there was – just the physical. It was just sex. It was too easy to fall into that. We never talked. We never did all of the small things together – the things that all add up to what makes a couple a real couple.”
Sydney leaned forward and buried her face into Eve’s neck. “Humph,” she whined. “Why do you have to be so damned right about this?” She sat back up and poked out her bottom lip.
“Cute, but I’m not buying that one little bit, Sydney Smith. I already know you’re not the kind of woman who pouts to try and get her way.”
Sydney laughed. “Busted. You’re right about that.” She changed her expression to seriousness. “Okay, so give me your definition of knowing one another enough. You’ve got to give me a little light at the end of the tunnel. How soon can we get started on all of the small things?”
“Now you’re making fun of me.”
“No, I’m really not. I agree with you. We both need to earn that fabulous sex that we’ll be having together … sometime … sooner than later … I hope.” Sydney grinned – a slightly wicked grin.
“You’re making me crazy Sydney. I’m imagining leading you into the bedroom right now and having you on the bed and multi-orgasmic within ten minutes, screaming my name and begging me never to stop.”
“Tease.”
“You started it.”
“Okay, I did. Just answer the question.”
“If we both can find time this week, not Friday, that doesn’t count as a weeknight, to get together for dinner, I’d take that as a sign that we’re both making sacrifices to spend time together. My shortest day is Wednesday and I could even make us dinner here. A very private and convenient location I might add.”
Sydney sat and thought, going through her schedule mentally.
“Oh crap, you have an interview Thursday. You’ll probably want to prepare for that,” Eve remembered.
“I’m already very prepared for that interview. You know what, I can make Wednesday work. It’ll also take my mind off of the upcoming interview.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am sure.”
“I can be home by six and have dinner ready by seven-thirty.”
“If you make it eight, that would be perfect.”
“Then we’ll eat at eight, Wednesday night.”
“I’ll bring my stopwatch.”
“That’s fine. I work very well under pressure.” Eve said, winking at Sydney.
“I’d better go,” Sydney said with a great deal of resignation in her voice. She slid off of Eve’s lap and stood.
“We could still make out for a while longer,” Eve said, standing up in front of her and trying to put her arms around Sydney’s waist.
“Nope,” Sydney responded, smiling, but pushing Eve’s hands away. “When I get worked up just from you winking at me like that … no … not when …”
“There will be no final satisfaction?”
“Exactly.” Sydney walked to the door. “I can’t concentrate on an evening of case file reviews after a slow tease with no happy ending.”
“I understand,” Eve replied, walking out the door with her.
Sydney gave her a quick kiss. “You don’t have to walk me back.”
“I was just going to take advantage of the view as you walked away.” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “You’ve got the nicest ass I’ve ever seen.”
Sydney took a few steps, and then looked back over her shoulder. “It’s a long hallway. Enjoy the show.”
~~~~

The bottle of Beaujolais and the flowers Sydney had bought on the way home were on the kitchen counter. Now if she could just remember to take them with her. She had no idea why she was nervous. Could it be the possibility of getting naked in front of someone for the first time in over eight months? Or maybe it was the pressure she was putting on herself to deliver up some mind-blowing sex by being so aggressive in the first place. Whatever the reason, she didn’t care. She knew that as soon as Eve smiled at her everything and anything that might be bothering her would just vanish. Sydney had no explanation for the phenomenon that was her reaction to Eve. Her mind wandered into what might happen tonight. She walked without even realizing it and was in front of Eve’s door with no awareness of the last few minutes.

Eve opened the door with a kitchen towel thrown over her shoulder looking domestic and as sexy as ever. As soon as she smiled, as before, Sydney was ready to jump into bed with her. Forgetting that it might be rude, she just said what was on her mind as she handed the wine and flowers to Eve. “Feed me woman, I’m starving.”

“It’ll be ready in five minutes. Sydney, these flowers are beautiful. Thank you so much. How did you know I liked lilies?”

“I didn’t, but I love them, so I figured fifty-fifty chance you would too.”

Eve handed the wine back to her. “You open this. Check the large middle drawer for the corkscrew. I’ll get a vase and put these in some water.”

“My god, it smells so good in here. Do I smell steak?”

“Yep. A rustic style ribeye with mushrooms and onions, and there are a couple of baked potatoes in there too.” Eve put the vase of flowers on the side of the dining table, along with the salt and pepper shakers and butter. Sydney went ahead and poured them both a half glass of wine.

“Is that real butter?”

“Well … yes …” Eve answered guiltily.

“Ribeye and real butter – are you trying to kill me, Dr. Anders?”

“I bet you had a salad for lunch,” Eve countered, as she removed the Dutch oven and potatoes from the oven.

“I did, at about 12:30, which is why I’m now starving.”

“Me too. It doesn’t hurt to splurge every once in a while. I’ll put out some healthier olive oil based margarine for your potato if you prefer.”

“No way. I want the butter.”

Sydney put the first bite of steak into her mouth and she could not believe the flavor. When Eve had described the way the steak was finished in a Dutch oven, Sydney was afraid it would be overcooked and a bit tough. It had the slightest amount of pink, and the juices and flavor were still there. It all but melted in her mouth as she chewed. Eve was watching her savor the first bite.

“I don’t even have to ask,” Eve said. “I can tell you like it.”

Sydney just shook her head and dug into the baked potato. When she managed to come up for air she asked, “What’s for dessert?”

“Me,” Eve answered matter-of-factly.

“You’ve got a hard act to follow,” Sydney replied.

Eve laughed. “I wouldn’t even try to compete with this steak. If it’s too much I can always make you a doggy bag for lunch tomorrow.”

“You heard the part about me being starving, right?”

“You’re quite the little smart-mouth tonight,” Eve said in a playful tone.

“I am,” Sydney said. “But that’s a good sign – it means I’m in a great mood.”

“I hope I have something to do with that good mood.”

“At least seventy-five percent of it.”

“What’s responsible for the other twenty-five percent?”

“I’m feeling really good about the interview tomorrow. I had a conversation today with an old friend who works there. Apparently the inside information is that the partners are very interested in making me an offer. So, since I know the job description and that side of the law quite well, I’m feeling very good about my chances.”

“Wow, that’s great. You are having a good day.”

“Call me greedy, but I’m hoping it will get even better.” Sydney put another bite of steak in her mouth and then moaned like she was getting more than just the pleasure of good food.

Eve raised an eyebrow at her and grinned. She continued eating. But there was no doubt she had the same thing on her mind as Sydney. Tonight she had no intention of shutting anything down – she was serious about being the dessert. Although she hoped there would be more of a slow savoring instead of a quick devouring. Of course, who says you can’t have multiple servings of dessert?

When they were finished, Eve went about clearing the table. Sydney helped. She was interested in getting on to other business as soon as possible.

“I just want to get the Dutch oven soaking and then I’ll be done in the kitchen,” Eve said. “You could pour us both a bit more wine and then I’ll join you in the living room.”

“Okay,” Sydney agreed. She took the two glasses to the coffee table and sat down. Although as far as she was concerned, she’d just as soon take it all straight to the bedroom.

When Eve joined her on the sofa, both of them moved toward the other. Sydney was a bit quicker on the uptake and straddled Eve, leaning in to kiss her. “I thought we could resume where we left off Sunday,” Sydney said.

“Great minds …” Eve started to say, but Sydney covered her mouth, kissing her in a way that made Eve dizzy with pleasure.

They both slowed down to a more sensuous pace as Eve moved her hands up Sydney’s blouse, slowly up her ribcage and then barely grazing her taut nipple through her bra. The telltale “Mmm” sound Sydney made told Eve she was cleared for further exploration. She leaned into Sydney’s ear. “You’re so beautiful Sydney.” She began unbuttoning the blouse and then Sydney helped her. It was taking Eve too long and she could not stand the break in contact. She flung the blouse into a nearby chair and then went ahead and removed her bra. In a moment Eve’s hands and mouth were all over her, driving her crazy with wave after wave of erotic sensation. Sydney was already so aroused she didn’t know how long she would last once other activities began. The warmth and throbbing between her legs was almost excruciating. She couldn’t believe she was actually going to do this, but she stopped Eve.

She broke away and grabbed Eve’s left wrist, looking at her with smoky eyes she spoke. “Can we move this to the bedroom now?”

“Oh, thank god,” Eve said. “I thought you were going to say we had to stop.”

Sydney laughed. “Are you out of your mind?”

“Give me one minute in the bedroom to do something, and then come in,” Eve said.

“Okay,” Sydney said, in a raspy gulp. She wasn’t sure she could go another minute without Eve touching her.

It was probably only forty seconds but Sydney headed to the bedroom anyway. Eve was lighting another candle on the far nightstand. The bed was made down. Dim candlelight and a made down bed – Sydney knew she would not be denied tonight. What Eve did not know was that in those forty seconds Sydney had removed the rest of her clothing. When Eve turned around she was in awe of the woman standing before her.

“Oh my,” she barely whispered. She stood and stared, as if mesmerized by an exquisite work of art. Sydney just stared back. Eve removed everything but her bra and panties. She walked to Sydney and embraced her, kissing her so deeply and passionately she thought she would need oxygen.

“My legs are about to buckle,” Sydney said, breathlessly. “I need the bed now.” She sat on the edge and slid herself back, never breaking eye contact with Eve, who followed, crawling over her. She made her way slowly down Sydney’s body, again using her hands and mouth in such a way that Sydney was close to exploding.

As she closed her mouth over Sydney’s breast, circling the nipple with her tongue and gently sucking, Sydney arched her back and moaned. She dug her hand into Eve’s hair and scalp, causing electric shivers down Eve’s back, who continued her exploration of Sydney’s breasts and neck, moving up every once and again to steal a kiss. All the while her left hand reached down and gently stroked between Sydney’s legs. She did not increase the speed or pressure of her movements until she felt the warm wetness of her arousal begin to flow. Then Sydney’s hips moved with the rhythm of her hand.

Eve hated to break the rhythm, but her desire to taste this beautiful woman was overwhelming. She moved herself as low as she possibly could while still maintaining contact with her hand. There were only a few brief moments between the time that her tongue replaced the pressure of her fingertips, but she still detected a whimper of disappointment from Sydney. Eve would just have to make it up to her. She wrapped her arms around Sydney’s legs and planted her hands firmly on top of Sydney’s thighs; restricting her movement in such a way that she knew would ultimately intensify her orgasm.

Eve used the tip of her tongue to tease Sydney’s clit and when she knew Sydney was close, she stopped and moved her tongue all the way over her. The scent and the taste were enough to make Eve ache and throb to the point of distraction. She felt Sydney try to thrust upwards as she continued to alternate between using the tip and the full length of her tongue. But she allowed Sydney only a small amount of movement of her hips and now she could tell that Sydney was close. She wanted very badly to be kissing those gorgeous lips when Sydney finally climaxed.

Eve moved up, replacing her tongue with her fingers without missing a beat. She moved her fingers through the slickness and over Sydney’s clit, duplicating the same rhythm as before. Sydney moaned and Eve closed her mouth over Sydney’s lips.

Sydney wrapped her arms around Eve, pulling her in as close as possible, undulating with the movements of her hand. When she tasted herself on Eve’s tongue she exploded into an orgasm so intense and so overwhelming she thought that her heart might stop. She moved her mouth against Eve’s neck, gasping and moaning, willing the sensations to never stop, while thinking that if they didn’t she would surely run out of air and die. What a wonderful way to go.

Eve sensed the subsiding of her arousal and moved to her side, with Sydney turning toward her, on her side as well. She let her right arm drape over Eve’s hip, and nuzzled her face back into Eve’s neck. “That was the best dessert ever.”

Eve kissed her on the temple. “I agree one-hundred percent.”

“But you haven’t had your dessert yet.”

“Give me a few minutes. I wanted to watch you enjoy having yours.”

“Why are we speaking in euphemisms?”

“Because I started it at dinner,” Eve admitted.

Sydney pushed herself up on her elbow and stared at Eve. “You have to be the sexiest woman I have ever met.” She reached around and released Eve’s bra clasp. Eve moved onto her back and let Sydney remove it. Sydney moved her hand down between Eve’s legs. “How’s your year going so far?”

“It just keeps getting better and better,” Eve said, rising up to kiss her.
