Mo put down her needlepoint and came into the bedroom where Phyllis was watching football. "Phyllis, we have to talk." To Phyllis, this was a relief. She had been feeling the uneasy tension in their one bedroom apartment for days. "Well it's about time you stopped moping around and pouting! What's wrong with you?"

Mo began to cry. "Phyllis, when you say that, I feel attacked. You're always so harsh."

"Oh, sure, that's right, I'm the bad guy, I'm always the bad guy, and you're the good guy," Phyllis shot back.

"I hear you saying that you feel unjustly accused. Let's talk about how that feels for you," prompted Mo.

"You're not my goddamn therapist! I heard enough of that feeling crap at the processing workshop last month."

"Okay, Phyllis, so I sense that you are hesitant to talk about your feelings. That makes me feel abandoned and brings back issues from my childhood."

Phyllis growled and turned back to the football game. But as she turned, Mo thought she saw a tear welling up in Phyllis' eye. She sat down next to Phyllis on the bed. "Honey?"

Phyllis clenched her jaw so it wouldn't tremble. "Do you think you're the only one who ever feels attacked?" she said.

Mo reached out to touch Phyllis' cheek. "I'm sorry, honey."

Slowly, Phyllis began to lower her defenses. Mo stroked and caressed her lover's wounded pride, swirling her warm, soft words around her lover's firm facade. Phyllis felt herself yielding to her lover's gentle ministrations. Strong feelings welled up inside of her. As her lover's ego strokes and tender words continued, gently but relentlessly, probing deeper, she felt the last of her defenses crumbling. She exploded into tears, crying out her innermost thoughts and feelings. Mo and Phyllis clung to each other, really getting to the core of their issues, and then collapsed, exhausted on the bed. They drifted into sleep, cuddling each other close.
