Alone

Copyright © by Jane Telfer, 1998

Alone,
wandering pathetically,
aimlessly searching the depths
of my mind,
for a memory of you
which will keep me at peace
and make me whole.

Yet since you are gone,
my mind has drawn a blank.
I know that I love you,
but all that I can retain
is the pain that is left in my soul,
the agony of loss and weeping,
which lingers and renders me sleepless.

A smile is brought to my lips
when I think on your beauty,
not just your raven black hair
and your pearly blue eyes;
but your tenderness and vulnerability,
your hidden dreams and yearnings.
And in the next instance,
again I am in tears,
because you are there,
and I am here.

I count the days until you return,
and every setting of the sun
and rising of the moon
marks another day of distance between us.
And soon you will hold me once more,
and your sweet whisper will be in my ear.
And I will be like one who dreams.
