Little Secret

Copyright © by BrendaLee Ellis, October 3, 2005

You do not see me as I truly am.
However, how many of us show
our true face to the world,
when all is illusion, anyway?
By day, you surround yourself
with those whom you call friends.
I know you better than they ever will,
and the night tells a different story.
Do they hold you at night when you scream?
Do they soothe away your fears?
No one understands you the way that I do.
Tell me that what we shared
Meant nothing to you.
Tell me that you do not thirst for me
The way that I do for you.
What am I to you?
Not a friend, you declare.
A distraction, a pastime,
A dirty deed done in secret...
You lose yourself in me again and again
Yet by morning's light you deceive yourself.
You crave my touch but you deny yourself
Because it must be wrong to feel this way.
In the morning you will leave me,
shut me away in the closet again,
but I know that you will return.
Admit it; you ache for me as I for you, but
I will always be your dirty little secret.
