Breakfast

Copyright © by Grace Campbell, October 21, 2002

we are breakfast
all of us
and it was my gift to you,
with buttered lips
and syruped hands,
it was the best that I could give.
Impatient bacon,
cherished grits,
waffles that radiated holy in the kitchen-
this breakfast I present you with
the meal of my love
and feast of my giving,
it is all I can think to give
and may the balance of tabascoed eggs
warm
apprehension
in my soul.

Your lips,
the syrup,
eating breakfast in the kitchen.
