Regret in a Bottle

Copyright © by Victoria Sauers, October 3, 2011

Staring down at the glass

clenched tightly in my hand,

I try and peer through the surrounding fog

Still only seeing bits and pieces

hidden behind old layers of dirt,

the only memories left of you -

Hiding my smile against your neck,

letting my hands trace familiar pathways

discovered years ago,

Meeting your soft lips just like the first time.

So, so foolish, to think

that I could take on the world for you,

keep you away from the burning hatred,

make you safe from the pain of knowledge,

When I couldn't even keep you in the end.
