Half An Hour

That’s all I had.

She started the conversation saying I had appeared arrogant last night. I stopped to ponder a descriptive never associated with my name before and did not know how to respond. But she had my attention. I remember she wore a grey t-shirt with an open collard white with light stripes over it. She stood unguarded, and comfortable next to me, my emotional defenses never triggered.

This was the morning that all participants at the women’s motorcycle rally were heading home after a long weekend of frivolity and fundraising to fight breast cancer. I wanted to pack before an 8:30 meeting but as I turned to leave the hotel breakfast room, I was eye to eye with the woman I playfully flirted with the night before.
She had donuts and toast on a paper plate, untouched as we talked. Then she asked if I was going to eat breakfast as well, it dawned on me then she was being polite by not eating. Instead of excusing myself to go pack, I found myself sitting with her. I did not get another cup of coffee, I did not get something to eat, instead, and I was glued to my chair, not knowing why, but felt this was a pivotal moment to experience.

What I saw in her was a glimpse of a woman trying to understand her life. The questions that rose from circumstances she had not expected. And I, listened, giving my open heart for comfort. We experienced familiarity and compassion without judgment. I was captivated and scared, but I stayed.

Half an hour, that’s all we had.

I saw a small part of her soul, and I am forever changed by it.
