Acceptance

After a restless night of
contemplation, of worry
and wondering and want
and denial, she rose from
her bed and picked up the
telephone, prepared to be
withholding, businesslike,
indifferent. The question
was planned, the wording
exact, and she prepared to
hear that Heather already
had plans, that she would
have loved to, but—
It would be easy.

But that wasn’t how it went.
She failed at disguising
the warmth in her voice. She
found a woman who was
sending her boys to their
father’s for the weekend,
a lonely, quiet, struggling
woman who needed this
retreat as much as Rachel
did. And she accepted, much
to Rachel’s surprise and
dismay and delight. She
accepted.

She would be fumbling to
pack now, looking for just
the right things to wear,
filling a small suitcase,
while Rachel sat on the
edge of her bed with the
telephone still in her hand,
struggling with knowing
if she had done the right
thing. Why was doing the
right thing
still important?
What did it matter? She
was giving a deserving
mother a break from her
home, a weekend of
serenity. She was
doing a nice thing.

But beneath that motive
of kindness, she knew
something else was happening.
It was that she was in fear
of. That deep and lurking
desire was what she was
trying to run from—unsuccessfully.
The desire for a friend—no,
a lover. A soft and fragrant,
gentle and caring person—
like Heather—who could
make her feel warm again.
Who could help her forget.
